I haven't been snorkeling since I was a kid, and would love to do it again, but I wear prescription glasses. Do they rent prescription masks at Castaway Cay?

I have no idea about CC (my gut says probably not), but I know our local dive shops sell and possibly rent them. May want to call DCL to ask. If it's critical, consider seeing if any of your local dive shops rent them.

Sorry no.

Theres 3 ways around this.
1 Wear contacts. I wear them and have no problems with a mask on and my contacts in, and Im a diver also.

2. If you have a fairly common perscription, you can get inserts for standard masks, and it would cost less then $100, including the mask.

3. Go to you local dive shop, and like above, pick out a mask, and have perscription lenses put in.

One other suggestion - I actually wore glasses under my snorkel. The snorkels are very tight and I just wore a pair that I didn't care about. Us folks who have been legally blind for 10+ years have many pairs of glasses. ;) It wasn't ideal but it was better than going blind or trying to wear contacts (they've never been able to fit me properly).

Just another cheap solution to think about!

Since we often go snorkeling on our vacations I invested in a RX mask from our local dive shop. Actually, I'm on my 2nd one as I chipped a lens in the first one & it started leaking (but I got it in 1990 so I got many years of use out of it b4 having to replace it a couple of years ago). My RX doesn't change THAT much so I don't worry about keeping up with replacing the RX in the mask - it's close enough and much better than having nothing. Anyway, they are totally worth the investment IMO to be able to see where I'm swimming and to not miss seeing anything. Just take a copy of your RX to them and they'll fit you in a mask that they can fit with custom lenses. :thumbsup2

My dh had the same problem~~i wear contacts and our Rx is "similiar" (better than nothing) so he wore a pair of mine just for the snorkeling and then threw them away...iknow its not the safest thing to do etc. but it was just one day of snorkeling and we snorkelled right when he put them in and he took them out as soon as he was finished. I knwo ebay sells some "reader type" snorkel masks that are liek reading glasses, but they can be $100. we dont snorkel that much so it wasnt worth the investment. know its not much help....good luck

I too invested in the snorkel mask a few years ago. It was about $200 including new mask and Rx lenses.

just something else to consider ...

underwater, object appear magnified (or, put another way, closer) -- so if you are just mildly near slighted, you may be just fine with a regular mask.

If you go to a Dive Shop you can rent a mask that has a prescription lens in it. We did this for my grandson several years ago for under $40.00 for a week. Way less than buying a mask unless you plan to use it often. Check around to see what is available in your area. Of course you will need to know what your script is in order to get the best match. It will not be perfect but will meet your needs I am sure. Good luck in finding something that will work will for you.

I too can confirm that they have NO prescription masks at Castaway or for that matter on any other excrusion I have been one. Get what you need before you go.

I am extremely near sighted......anything more than a foot from my face is fuzz....and I see pretty darn well underway with a normal mask. I went on a snuba excursion in Hawaii and they did have a prescription mask, saw a little better underwater, and of course, above water I had near normal vision. So borrow a mask and check it out in a neighbor's pool, you may find you see just fine underwater.

I bought my DH & DS snorkel masks that are not true prescription snorkel masks, but you can order them w/ a range of -1.0 to +4.0 for around $60. You could get -2.5 for one eye & -3.5 for the other eye or any combination in range available. Both of them say they work great for them. I just called their eye doc & told them what I wanted to do, gave them the range, the doc told me which one fit their prescriptions best, & I ordered them off the internet from snorkel-mart--see the following site:

After I was sure they worked, I bought them each their own fins & snorkels. I didn't want to invest until I was sure they like the snorkel. I picked some good ones up off Amazon or maybe it was the same site for around $30-$35.

They've loved having them at CC & on snorkeling trips.
