Preschool teachers how do you stay awake during nap time

LOL my son is sleeping now, and I want to take a nap! I have to stay busy or I will pass out!

;)

I would make sure I had something to do. Work on the next art activity, clean, organize. I would also read.

Eat your lunch, have a cup of coffee or tea, and keep moving. Do what needs to be done with cleaning and planning. Do they allow you to bring in a book or a magazine? Just keep telling yourself that you are at work and need to make a good impression. Curling up on a mat with a blankie and falling asleep=bad impression on the boss!

We get everything done quickly but I will keep asking for things to do and if nothing else if I feel my self fading I will step outside eventually I well get into a routine I hope p.

Go to bed earlier the night before so you're not as tired during the day.

The hardest part of my day was staying awake during nap time, when there is mo planing or cleaning up to do

I hear ya! I worked in a child care center for 4 years. Our nap time was 2 hours long, lights off, Enya playing in the background- a very peaceful moment in a hectic day.
I usually took my lunch break during the first hour & someone else would sit in my room, while I had my break. The 2nd hour I stayed busy writing our daily report, lesson planning & finally deep cleaning.

There was a period of time, I was a floater (vs a primary teacher) (I worked an odd schedule) during those times:I asked if the classroom teacher had anything I could help with, deep cleaned toys, restocked diapers & wipes, emptied garbage cans.

When I had nothing else to do: drank a big cold glass of water to refresh myself, sat & enjoyed a quiet moment. Etc.

We had access to computers & laptops- do you? Could you offer to help look up ideas for future lesson plans. Are you in the same room each day? What ages?
You mentioned cleaning, what about deep cleaning? Removing toys from shelves, dusting shelves, washing toys (beyond the daily cleaning routine)

Yes I will have Internet access so I will do that right after I eat

I taught in a preschool for 5 years - I always seemed to be busy during nap time (which was 1.45-2 hrs long in my room). I would eat, fill out all paperwork, work on bulletin boards, hang artwork, etc. It helped keep me awake and cut down on time I needed to spend working in the room outside of school hours.

Is this the job you volunteer at?
If you are not the primary teachers- here are some things you could offer to research (some classroom teachers do not want others to lesson plan for them)
Parent education articles (biting, potty training) those kinds of things.
Holiday program ideas or the holiday class gift (if your place celebrates holidays, or mothers/fathers day)

personally, i never felt like i had time to find a great parent gift & usually had help from co teachers in coming up with ideas.

Large motor indoor games- soon we will be inside a lot. having some extra games to play inside, would be very handy!

OR let the director know- you are willing to help with some extra teacher paper work (preparing art supplies, cutting laminated material etc)

Yes this is the jib I volunteer at

I did part of my student teaching in a preschool setting(way back when...) The kids usually slept for about 1-1/2 hrs every afternoon. It didn't take them long to go to sleep and then the teachers would break out their needle work. They taught me how to do counted cross-stitch, which was something I really liked and was easy to take along in a tote bag. Is there some sort of craft you can do to bide the time? Knitting, crocheting, drawing?

If that's out of the question, ask your lead teacher for a project. I'm sure she has a few things you could do. And if she doesn't, perhaps you could go to the media center and help shelve books while the little ones are sleeping.

Just out of curiousity, I would bet since you are a volunteer, you are probably not alone with the children. If that is the case then you could ask your director for other work to do.

I think it is great that you volunteer. When I ran a day care it would have been great to have an extra set of caring hands!
