Preparing to do the CP

This will be my first time living on my own...when I head down to do the CP. Is there anything I should be aware of...like renter's insurance. Do I need to get renter's insurance...b/c I'm a renter...but not really. This would be my first time living separately from my parents and in a different state. So, does anyone have any advice for me so that I know how to prepare? I have a while yet till I do the CP but I wanted to start preparing now so that I'm ready to go when I go down.
