I purchased a great t-shirt from The Disney Store..it has all the characters on it...I thought it would be perfect to leave at GS and have the characters sign with Happy 10th Birthday to my DD on the back. The questions are ....how should I prepare the shirt? Wash it? Put some sort of cardboard between so whatever markers won't bleed to the other side? What type of markers? It's such the perfect shirt....I don't want to do the wrong thing! Help!!

definitely wash it first

it removes some chemicals that ultimately will have the autograph fade in subsequent washes

You can use a permanent laundry marker, or a "Sharpie" marker available at any ofice supplies store {staples, office max, etc...)

Sharpies come in every color

we do pillowcases each year, never had a problem

So, you use Sharpies and they work fine for you.......should I worry about them bleeding onto the other side when the Characters sign....should I place the cardboard? It might make signing easier. My t-shirt says "Dreaming is Believing" with all the characters...so perfect..I just want the signing to be perfect too. Thanks for your input. :)

Someone posted about a week ago DCL was no longer doing this. That you could not leave your stuff to be autographed anymore. Does anyone know if this is true? I was hoping to leave a shirt to be signed as gifts for my children.

We were able to have some items signed during our July 24th Wonder sailing. DS and DD each had a t-shirt signed and I had a 8x10 photo mat autographed, which BTW looks great with one of our Castaway Cay pictures! :goodvibes

Did you leave the shirt at guest servies or take it to the characters you wanted to sign the shirt?

We just returned yesterday from the last West Coast Magic cruise - and we had pillowcases signed.

I followed the advice from this board - washed the pillowcases first, dropped them at GS the first day at sea, with multiple sharpies and a request for 'all' characters. The CM at GS didn't seem at all surprised by my request. I included a phone card in with the sharpies as a thank you. Our cabin steward handed them to us on Friday night, and the kids were thrilled

We also saw people having characters sign shirts, etc., in person, though generally it was autograph books.

What a nice thing to do. But who gets to keep the phone card?

I always wondered if they train CMs to do all the autographs, so one guy/gal can sit and get a whole pillow case done in one shot without having to pass it to the next guy to sign. Do you think this is how it works?

I used wax paper to line the inside of my pillowcases and then rolled it up. I didn't use laundry markers which was a mistake. I took a mixture of Sharpies and the new Bic (can't remember the name) permanent markers in all the cool colors. My graddaughter spilled something on hers and I washed it cold, gentle cycle when we got back and it all ran. I was very bummed. The kids tried to make me feel better by saying it looked "tie-dyed!". The moral of the story? Use laundry markers. You might not get the cool colors but your colors won't bleed/ run.

Well, funny you should say that, because that's how I assumed it worked. I'd guessed that whoever drew the short straw that day sat in back signing things, and I included the phone card for him/her. However, we got many of the same signatures when we met the characters on board, and they are *remarkably* like the ones on the pillowcases - so who knows, maybe I should have included 15 phone cards. :)

we just got back yesterday as well...and we had no problem w/have them sign our DSs tank tops! brought it to gs the first night, and was delivered to our room on friday. had all the characters sign...

we washed our tank tops, and brought sharpies, and left them all in a ziplock bags.

good point about the phone card thank you gift, Katey!!!!

what???!!!?? draw a straw & sign?? you mean "forgery"???!!!??? no, the characters stop at gs, when they are done w/their appearances, and sign away, that's how it's done!! :flower:

Thanks for this great thread. I know my 6 year old son will love the idea os the characters signing either a pillowcase or t-shirt. :earboy2: I know you can buy laundry markers at most fabric stores or places like Michaels.

Thanks again-

Sharpies? Laundry Markers? Someone said the Sharpies ran...does anyone else have a story like that? I would just HATE to have that happen!!! Want to maker sure I make the right maker decision!!

Does anyone use fabric markers. They have some fine tipped ones in a multi color pack that I thought I would try. Any negatives over the Sharpies? Thanks, Tricia

I have noticed that the sharpies fade over time faster than then laundry markers. I have seen the laundry markers in 3 different colors: black, red and green. My suggestion is to get a new tshirt and take a test run with both the sharpie and laundry marker and then make you decision.

we've had one done on our first cruise a year and a half ago...w/sharpie markers. and they do fade. we had grey mickey shirts...but by the time they completely fade out, i'm sure our DSs will out grow their shirts, anyways!

this time, we brought a red mickey tank top...and used sharpies as well. i'm sure it'll fade in time...w/so many wearing, and washing...

and then, again, by the time the signatures fade away, the tank will have been thru so much loving & wearing...it's time for another cruise, and another shirt/tank/pillowcase/etc. for signing!!!!! :flower:

Mine did run. I used a mix of the new Bic permanent markers and Sharpies. I washed cold water, gentle short cycle and air dried. It ran in the washer. The signatures were on about 2 weeks so I'm assumming they had time to set. Some ran and some didn't. I don't know why. I just know that next time, if there is one.... I'll definitely go with laundry markers that are specifically for use on fabric.

My daughter wore a Tshirt on the last day of school and had all the kids sign it with Sharpies. While it didn't run, it faded really bad after 2 washings. This has just been my experience.
