This may sound like a really silly question, but I'm a new mom, so take pity on me

Our daughter is drinking formula and we are trying to measure out 3 oz. Well, the scoop that comes with the formula makes 2 oz. 4 oz. or 6 oz. There are instructions of how much water to add to make these measurements. But how do you go about making odd numbers of ounces? Do I just eyeball how much I think half of the little scooper is? :confused3 I don't want to put in too much formula or not enough.

Again, silly question, but I appreciate any suggestions :goodvibes

My kids never drank formula - but couldn't you just make 6 oz and put a 3oz bottle in the fridge for the next feeding?

I know that I had a friend who would make a pitcher of formula in the morning and use that for the day.

I used to make it by the pitcher. Then pour it into the bottles for the day. This was nice because only had to do it once a day.

You get a sense how much they drink each time. They don't stay at 3 oz for very long. This worked well for me. Even by the time you get up to 8 oz.

I know people like to carry the bottle of water then put the powder in the bottle if you are out but I always used the can stuff that you added water too so we just kept the bottles in a cooler bag when we were out.

Ding ding ding :)

Just eyeball it. Having the powder off a teeny, tiny bit for that ONE ounce isn't going to make a bit of difference. :)

I used to make it by the quart. I had a Rubbermaid container just for that purpose. I'd make it in the morning, and use it for the day. When they started drinking more even amounts, I'd just measure the powder into a powdered formula travel container, and just use room temp tap water in the bottle.

Now that I think of it, I think I would make an extra ounce too, just in case they drank more. I never wanted them to suck the bottle completely dry because they'd be sucking air at the end.

I'd make 4oz in case she wants more, unless there is a medical reason you are limiting her to 3oz. If so, I'd make 6oz and put 3 in a second bottle in the fridge.

I also made formula in the pitcher when DS was on strictly formula, it was sooo much easier. I bought new bottles for this DS, the Tommee Tippee ones at BRU and they come with a nifty formula mixer I can't wait to try! The formula powder actually sits in the bottle, on the top, in a seperate little container and you put the water in the bottle before leaving the house. Nicer than carrying around the formula container!

Man! that seems so obvious!!! I don't know why DH and I didn't think of that. I blame lack of sleep....

Thanks everyone for your help :goodvibes

I found it was easier to make individual bottles (I made big batches with #1 and #2). This way, I could use tap water instead of heating it up - much easier, especially at 3 am!

We would sometimes make it by the bottle (when travelling or out on errands) and used the formula sticks - little prepackaged amounts of formula, just pour in the bottle and add water.

But at home, we made it by the pitcher. I would make it in the morning, pour out the bottles as needed, and wash everything at night. (We never bothered with warm bottles though - both our kids liked cold.)

Babies R Us makes a great formula pitcher that someone purchased for us when DS was born. Every night I would make a pitcher full of formula for the next 24 hours. This worked great for the odd-ounce servings and for when DS wanted a little more, I could just top off his bottle as needed!

I eyeballed it too. I didn't like the pitcher idea because then it would have to be chilled and re-heated. DD happily took room temp bottles, and I wasn't going to complicate thigns! :lmao:

I nursed, but eyeballed the powder, later in time. But now I read that where Mom's are adding an once more water to stretch it is undernurishing the baby? I have a guilty concious now

I agree to make two bottles of 6 oz, or 12 oz, for 4 bottles, But, if she make a quart that could create a hole entire nother problem.....32 is divided by 2, 4 and 8 not 3.....In another week they will be downing double that.
