Be careful when you purchase and ask if you can open it at the register prior to completing the sale.
The reason is there are a ton of scams going on with Visa Gift Cards, one of them somehow they get the card, get the numbers and then will actually destroy some of the card or the numbers. They minute it's "Activated" the scammer knows and then pulls the money off by buying say paypal cards or ebay or just other gift cards. they destroy the numbers so the purchaser can't use and it gives them time to pull the money.
I know because it happened to me. I bought a $500 Visa at CVS (pharmacy here) and it was for our oldest daughter for her birthday. I opened it in my car because I was putting it into her birthday card.
When I opened the gift card, the last 4 numbers were missing on the card. I went back into CVS, they said they couldn't do anything because I already completed my purchase and I had to call Vanilla Gift Card. I did such, they confirmed the $500 was already gone. So in about 5-10 minutes. I then had to send my receipt and a photo of the gift card and they told me it's becoming a massive scam.
They, Vanilla Gift Card, did end up mailing me a replacement card. They told me to always open it at the register and tell the person why. That way you can look the card all over before you make that purchase.
