I've been on Premarin for over 2 years and have decided to stop using it. I stopped about 2 weeks ago and have noticed a great deal of weight gain around my abdomen area. I have heard about the weight gain women experience during menopause, but thought that it happens whether you take HRT or not. Has anyone experienced a great deal of middle body weight gain after stopping HRT? Thanks

I took Premarin for 15 years and loved it. I'm 66 years old and every time I went to the doctor, he would try and get me to stop taking it. Look I had great bone density, my hair and skin looked good and I had a figure. Nothing great but a shape. Now just a few months after getting off the Premarin I'm shaped like a watermelon,my hair and skin and everything else is very DRY. I don't feel as energetic either. I hate what they put those poor horses through to collect the urine and I wish that I could find some sort of replacement therapy. My doctor put me on Vivelle Dot patch. What a joke and very expensive. I'm considereing trying a progestrone cream. Anybody have any experience with this cream. Thanks ever so much. Marie

I was on Premarin for 10 years after having complete hysterectomy(uterus and ovaries) but was advised to stop due to a different medical condition. I have MOST DEFINITELY noticed weight gain especially in my middle section including upper thighs. I am 53 and I realize that I am about the age but it seems awfully coincidental to the timing of Premarin stoppage. I would really like to go back on it but MD has advised against it. I am quite upset about this and wonder if anyone has any suggestions? I am changing my diet and beginning to exercize but it seems I am a bit impatient.

This thread is 10 years old, but will respond to pp.

I, too, was on Premarin - best thing to ever happen to me! As for the weight gain going off it - as long as you're on Premarin you are receiving artificial estrogen, so you're basically being able to maintain your 'youth' (for a better way to explain it). Our bodies do/will change with menopause and a certain amount of 'unwanted' weight gain in the least desired places will happen.

Additional exercise/watching diet will help to a degree, but will 'not' keep all the changes (dry skin, etc.) from advancing (called aging ;)) because that is what estrogen helps our bodies with.

So, in reality, it's not so much going off Premarin, but just that it was helping prolong the estrogen in our systems, therefore the aging process. :goodvibes

The weight gain will continue to happen unless we do more to keep our metabolism going.

Not too much fun, eh?? :(

It's been almost 10 years since the first post, it would be interesting to see how she is doing. I checked her profile and she hasn't posted in over 2 years so she will probably not see this.

My gyn wanted to put me on premarin for heavy bleeding about 5 years ago and I said no because my mom had breast cancer, I was afraid. I naturally went through menopause about 2 years ago and I have gained a little weight but no hot flashes or anything.

I love how Dr. Oz's advertisements pops up on the bottom about belly fat.

I have been on Vivelle dot HR P tach 7 years and I have been struggling 5 years now, wondering How to get rid of my belly. It is either from the patch or my Nexium. I ham trying to cut breads and Frutose corn Syrup, which is in just about everything.

I was surprised to see any thread related to Premarin...
Good lord, arent' there many better options now...

Then I noticed that this is a ghost from ten years ago!

I have been on HRT for many many years... Due to some physical issues... not just regular menopause or birth control, etc....

Anyhow, back in the day, Premarin was it.....
SO glad when I was able to try other options...
Have been on FemHRT (Jinteli) for many years now, and would NEVER go back.

At my last visit with my GYN, he mentioned tapering off the hormone therapy, now that I am a woman of a certain age....

Like one other woman just posted... I am thinking NO WAY!!!!
I think if began to refuse to continue to prescribe me the full regular dose, I would go looking for another physician who has no problem with woman my age continuing HRT.

My husband is younger than I am, and I am quite sure he would agree about 1000%!

Premarin was fine for me!

HRT is dangerous for use past the main 'need' for them for women of a certain age! A gyn would be negligent to keep prescribing them just for the 'fringe' benefits of estrogen.

The 15 year old zombie thread lives on...
I'm curious if people had okay success with discontinuing HRT without huge weight gain in the abdomen?

I've been on birth control pills for HRT for about 8 years now, and learned from my new doctor that they are fairly high dosage for an HRT method. I was taking them continuously (with a once-per-quarter break) for perimenopause symptoms and they worked amazingly well...and my hair looked *fabulous*! :-)

I tried to split the pills, but that seems ridiculous, and I believe the dosage is still higher than traditional HRT...my doctor is not that familiar with all of the choices, so I wanted to check in with the group.

One thing I don't want to do is take Premarin or other horse-related products, because it just seems too sad. What are your suggestions for good, low-dose products with both estrogen and progesterone that aren't horsey? Thanks in advance!

P.S. I think it's awesome (and funny) that a Disney board is the best place I've found for this discussion...yay Disney!
