Pregnant worried about Zika - advice?

STEP AWAY FROM THE GOOGLE

This cracked me up..... During my pregnancy I would google everything. Onetime I was pretty freaked out (the ultrasound tech said something I didn't understand I google it and well it was bad!) so I called my doctor and he goes well Doctor Google doesn't know everything..... After that I tell everyone Doctor Google isn't the best source

Per LiveScience: There is general consensus that we don't know much about the long-term effects of DEET, Barr acknowledged. And there are limited studies looking specifically at pregnant women. But when facing the possibility of microcephaly, women would risk far more by not using the repellant than by using it.

Thus why I said certain bug sprays can't or shouldn't be worn while pregnant. LEmon and Eucalyptis works as well and doesn't come with DEET.

More importantly, thank you for proving my point: this board is clearly not qualified and in fact dangerous in giving this woman advice in traveling if she's concerned about Zika.

Who is Barr?

Sounds like you are giving medical advice yourself. Maybe you are proving your own point.

I wouldn't worry at all, but then again I'm not a worried type of person. Your risk of contracting something from a human at the parks is much much higher. (Cold, flu, e coli from worker's hands) etc...Heck your chance of being hit on the bus, crossing the street, or even being injured on a ride are all higher then catching Zika. Good luck!

Utimately, it's the OPs decision to make. Her pregnancy, her baby, her trip. I'm not sure I would rely on the opinions of a bunch of strangers on the internet. She does need to ask her doctor because this could potentially be a serious situation.

Yes, the cases in Florida were obtained outside of the country. However, it is possible that a mosquito bites a person with Zika and then goes on to bite someone else. The virus can be spread that way as well( also sexual contact, as earlier noted).

Seems like they're taking it seriously enough in Florida..

I'd say your listeria risk from eating fruit/lettuce at disney is higher. Go, have fun, and take precautions.

I am a pharmacist and one thing I tell patients is to never consult Google. In this instance your best resource is your OB!

I am going in April. I will be in second trimester, so my risk is somewhat lower, but I have talked to my OB. Where we live the climate is not much different than Orlando and I probably got 400 mosquito bites around my hometown last year. Not one bite the three times we went to Disney. So my risk is probably higher at home than traveling. However I will wear bug spray and be cautious. My OB did say that DEET was safe and was the most reliable way to avoid bites. So much as I hate it, I will use it. I worry about Zika, too, but I can only do what I can and I think risks are pretty low in the US at this point.

I absolutely do not want to derail this into a vaccine post, but as an example, I've had quite a few conversations with multiple physicians about vaccines in which they tried to tell me a specific ingredient wasn't in them. I presented them with the readily available facts (vaccine insert which they clearly hadn't read, for one) and each time got an apology from them for giving me misinformation. So with all due respect, I disagree. Doctors don't know everything, and being informed is never bad. HOWEVER, as always when consulting the Google, note your sources and get confirmation from multiple reputable sites.

I have just seen a lot of patients led astray by false information found on the Internet, so I always recommend to talk to a healthcare professional before making any decisions about your health.

Certainly. There is a lot of bad info mixed in with the good, unfortunately.

I wouldn't trust the CDC to save my life. They are the ones who had multiple guidelines posted on their website, at the same time, for healthcare providers to follow when treating those w/Ebola.

Found this post because my wife is Pregnant. We had a cruise booked in May on the Fantasy. Cancelled that because it was a Caribbean cruise. We opted to stay a week at AKL. I can't recall ever being bit in our last 5 trips, including at AKL. I'm not sure if it's just because it's something I never focused on? I saw a few of you said the same. Just curious if anyone recalls AKL being a problem with bites? We are going and will take precautions. Just curious though.

We stayed at AKL last year in March and I don't recall getting any bites. I can't think of a single time I got bit at Disney, actually. We are back from our trip and none of us got any bites/saw any mosquitos at Disney. We were dilligant about bug spray though and I wore long sleeves & pants as much as possible. I suggest you also wear bug spay to avoid getting bit since Zika can be sexually transmitted.

Thanks for the response. I do plan to take precautions as well. We never wear spray down there and I still don't recall ever getting a bite. Of course, this time we will. Thanks again.

I've used Avon Skin-so-soft to keep mosquitos away from me. They have it in spray form.
