I am 11 weeks this week and have my first hospital appointment a week on Monday, I am just wondering if they will do a scan on that day or if I will have to go back. I have heard a lot of ladies saying that they were only offered a scan at 20 wks and I would really like one before that jus to check that everything is ok.

I guess my main question is do you know how you go about getting a private scan done?

Thanks for the advice in advance!

I'm not preg but i know in my area they only offer 20 wk scans.Maybe ask you midwife if you want a private one early. They are not cheap though.
I guess that they don't do them any earlier as baby would be so small they wouldn't be able to see much, though they would see a heart beat ect but they pick that up on your appointments.

It does depend on your area Gems. I would ask your midwife what the policy is when you go tomorrow. Ours did one at 13 weeks I think and then another at twenty. Sorry to be vague!

You should get a scan at 12 weeks I did but I think it depends on where you go etc... you could phone you consultant/hospital before and ask!! I had a scan at 5 and 7 weeks too but this was only because I had an operation on my stomach before christmas and they wanted to check everything!

You can pay to have the scans done - again the price will depend on your area! Just as a guide - to go fully private in my area costs 1,500 pounds this includes all the scans put on video and the 3D colour scan! Additional scans are approx 75 pounds!!!

It's great when you see your baby for the first time and hear the heartbeat!!! I would have a scan everyweek if I could!! I had a nucal translucancy scan last Monday and I now have to wait until the 6th May to have my 20 weeks scan...how will I cope!!!!!!

Let us know how you get on!!! :teeth:

In our area, they are quite "scan generous" :). I was pregnant last year (unfortunately lost the baby) and our EPU (early pregnancy unit) were happy to do a scan at any time if you had any worries. You didnt even need a Drs recommendation and they were marvelous.

My hospital (Harold Wood) does a 12 week scan plus we are lucky enough to have the OSCAR system in place which is basically a one appointment "risk assessment" where you have a blood test, midwife interview and scan and get all the results back then and there. Its very good. We then have another scan at 22-23 weeks and fortnightly midwife visits.

A friend of mine who uses a different hospital (Southend) says they only have one scan at 14/16 weeks, so it does vary quite a bit.

Good luck with your scan, its a very exciting moment! I bet your partner will come away convinced its a boy, as there are lots of "bits" floating around that men always think are boy bits!! Needless to say this isnt always the case! DH was quite shocked when we had a daughter first time round :).

I had dating scans at 9 weeks and 14 weeks and then a scan at 20 weeks to see check for problems. They cant really see much on the earlier scans to see if all is ok. It does depend tho where you live, in Portsmouth the scanners are pretty old so the pictures are not that great but Ive seen pictures done in other areas and they were much clearer.

you can get a scan via Bupa which will give you a risk factor much like the triple test (blood test) This is done at around 11 - 15 weeks.
This is only a risk factor though and will only give you your personal risk. If this then comes out low you will be offered further investigations eg an amnio or CVS sampling. The charge for Bupa nuchal scanning was around £100.00

Scans go off area's.
I have had 2 early scans at our EPU (early pregnancy unit),My 12week scan and my 20weeks scan and this is it now,I wont be offered any more unless there is problems.
I have a few friends who are pregnant who have only been offered a 12 or a 20 weeks scan, so I think it goes off your area, and how your hospital handles pregnant ladies.

For private scans,there is http://www.babybond.com/
Which alot of people have opted for.

Good Luck :)

P,s If this is your first appointment it will be your Booking in appointment, where bloods/urine are taken and you will discuss your pregnancy, and be given leaflets/books etc.
You should mention to your Midwife at the appointment about your scan she may be able to sort you out or be able to recommend what to do.

thank you all! I am looking forward to the appointment, it seems like ages since I last saw the midwife (about 6 weeks ago).

I am sure that I am getting a bump already though! I have got my work trousers done up with a safety pin today!! :rotfl:
