Hello! My family was planning a trip to Disney World for October. DH is military, and it turns out we may not be able to go until December. Our DS was born a preemie. He stayed healthy this past winter (we mostly stayed at home) and did have the RSV shots. He will be 18 months in December. Is he still at increased risk? Would you go then or wait? Thanks for the advice! :)

How early was he and did he have any major lung health issues? My ds was born at 34 weeks but had no complications really. We did synagis his first winter. I took to Disney at 7 mos and again at 20 mos and had no problems.

AT 18 mos I likely wouldn't worry unless your child has health issues. Just be careful. Oct. if the very begining of cold/flu/rsv season so you are likely to be ok.

I'm a preemie mom too, only she's turning 4! The first winter is the toughest. I'm not a doctor but I suspect he'll be fine by 18 months.

He was 34 weeks, docs say he was more like 32 weeks after they looked at him. He was in the hosp. for 3 1/2 weeks, had the respirator, ect... We had a (thankfully) healthy winter. He did recently have the croup, and we took him to the ER were he was given steroids and an air treatment. After 2 hours we went home and he was fine. I'm just worried that he'll get RSV and I'll think I could have prevented it by not going. On the other hand, we've been planning this trip for years and he could be fine... You hear a lot of the first winter but rarely the 2nd.

My preemie went to Disney World when she was 5 months old. We made sure that we were washing our hands and using hand sanitizer often but other than that (and we were doing that at home anyway) there was nothing out of the ordinary. I agree with the other poster - ask your doctor.

Another Preemie mom here too!! I basically stayed home with DD her whole first year so by the time she was 18 months, we were so excited to go to WDW!! Although we did go in Sept. I would check with your Ped and any other specialists you still see, if any. We went to her Pulmonary Dr. just to make sure we didn't need Synegis again & check out any other problems. When we did get there, we just used a lot of Purell and Purell wipes & a high chair cover but that's nothing different then we do at home. HTH!!
Go and have fun!!

Thanks everyone! I will def talk to his ped at his 12 month (when did THAT happen??? ) checkup, but I'm loving hearing everyone's opinion and own preemie stories- keep them coming. :)

Mom here of a 24 weeker that is now almost 15. We did the whole NICU thing and two months on the vent. Ds came home in September almost a month before his due date. Pretty rare. That first winter we stayed home almost completly. WE started going out a little more in the spring. By the next fall we pretty much treated him normaly. This was before the RSV prevention was around. Anyway, we did still avoid groups of chidren, no child care or sunday school or anything like that. He never had RSV and did not have pnuemonia again till he was 4th grade. That second year was when we delt with lots of ear infections. He really had no major respritory issues till his teen years. He does have some mild asthma now and he has trachiomalashia but both are under good control.DS did have a lot of eye issues from ROP but time, surgery and lots of prayers have given him vision to live a normal life. He is an A student that has never had any learning problems at all and is complety normal in every way.

DS was born in 1992 when 24 weekers were give very low odds to live and amost 0% chance of normal. He weighted 747 grams or not quite 1 lb 10 oz.

Nice to meet some other NICU moms!!

I'm a level 2 nursery nurse. I know the docs like to give a flu shot the second fall of the child's life, but I'm not sure if they give the synagis again too. I think it's only for the first winter. I know it costs over $1000, and we have to go through a lot of red tape to get insurance companies to approve us giving it before discharge from the hospital. Just make sure you wash hands a lot and use the hand sanitizer. I think at 18mos, he should be fine.

We took our former 30-weeker at 22 months old and just followed the same "procedures" as home - lots of hand washing and Purell! Like the other posters, I'd say ask your Dr if you should be concerned.....

Glad to see some other NICU mommies around! And to the nurse that mentioned the price of Synagis - you're not kidding it's expensive! DS's second season of Synagis cost our insurance company aprox $18,000! We were lucky that he was still under a year when the RSV season started, I think that's why our Insurance was willing to cover it.

My triplets were born at 32 weeks, 6 days and we were very careful until the summer after they turned two. My one daughter has a hole in her heart and therefore put her in a higher risk catagory for RSV. Talk to you doctor because December is shown as the peak RSV time on the CDC website. Another thing to do becides Purell is to do a quick clean of your hotel room. Disinfect the main things you will touch such as the faucets, light switches and remote just in case the previous people were sick. I plan on doing this when we go in 2008 (with then four year old triplets and a full-term one year old) just to help prevent illness. Yes, having three preemies turned me into a bit of a germ-a-phobe :sad2: .

Enjoy your trip!

he might or might not qualify for shots again--it depends how sick he was this year. My 29 weekers did not qualify the 2nd year--we got several yucky colds, but doing well a 6 yrs old. With that said, he is no more likely to get sick at Disney than your church nursery. At 18 mths, they touch and lick a lot of stuff--they spread a lot of germs--that's toddlers for you. Just take a lot of hand sanitizer, as well as antibacterial wipes. At each ride, swipe the handle and seat with a wipe before you put him on it and wipe hands several times during the day, esp. after being on playground, etc.
These are basic rules for McD playplaces, your local parks, etc. Anywhere where other kids' hands come in contact. Take him and enjoy!!

DS (4 in July) was a 32 week preemie and had 2 full winters of RSV Synagis shots. The rule of thumb from my Health Care Provider limited in public places was 2 years old.

Personally, I'd wait on that Disney trip until Age 2+.

My trips were born at 33 1/2 weeks in May of 2005. None were on respirators only c-pap. None came home on apnea monitors. All got synagis shots their first winter. They did not qualify to get the shots this second winter. My pediatrician said to limit public places and large crowds as much as possible during the 2nd RSV season. We kept them in as much as possible - no malls, no "organization" christmas parties (non-family functions), fast-food places, grocery stores etc. I would not have brought them to disney this past fall/winter (around 18 months). This did not go over well with some of our family but thems the breaks. It was very inconvenient being a hermit and a total pain but it was only for a short time and no one got RSV.

You should talk to your doctor. Only your doctor knows the health of your child and whether or not they should be at disney (or other crowded places) during RSV season at 18 months. If your doctor says it's not a good idea until your child is 2, that will be here before you know it. The time flies. :)

Mom of a 26 weeker son ( 1 lb 10 oz at his lowest, now age 13, 5'5", 125 lbs and healthy as a horse) here. I really think that exposure to crowds should depend on how seriously a preemie has RDS/BPD. When Dr's know that a woman is likely going to deliver a preemie, the more time they have to give steroids and develop those lungs before birth.

In my DS's case, he was delivered very unexpectedly, and had serious lung problems. He was on a vent for quite a long time, had surgery to close his Ductus Arterios (to allow blood to bypass the lungs), had several lung collapses and chest tubes, had apnea so severe that he quit breathing many times each day for the majority of his NICU stay, and came home on O2 and an apnea monitor after a three month hospital stay. He pretty much was a mess. He came home in Oct, and we were told that if he contracted a common cold, never mind RSV, that first winter he could very well die from it. His pulmonologist also said absolutely no daycare until after he turned two and possibly later. We followed his Dr's orders strictly, and he made it through his first winter without a cold. When we did put him into daycare, at age 2 1/2, he ended up being the healthiest kid in the bunch, and almost never caught what the rest of the kids got. He wasn't breast fed either. Anyway, to this day he is an incredibly strong, healthy and resilient kid.

Homeschoolingmom, your Dr knows best, and gestational age + lung complications need to be factored into the decision to take your child to WDW, or into any crowded environment. Having a preemie in and of itself is not necessarily enough to raise concern about exposing a child to crowds and germs.

MSSANDRA, congrats on your 24 weeker growing into a healthy 15 yo. I know how touch and go the lives of 24 weekers were in 1993 when my DS was born. There was just one of them who survived in the 3 months we spent in the NICU, and he had significant and likely long term problems, including CP.

To all of you preemie moms/dads, it takes special parents to make it through having a baby born so little. Prayers and pixiedust: to you as you raise your preemies into adulthood!

Mom of a 34 weeker here (Dec 28th baby). We did RSV shots her 2nd winter (the 1st she didnt qualify as her older sister wasnt in school). Anyways, we took her to Disney when she was 9 months old in Sept. She did fine. In fact she was great there (much happier than home!).

She is going back again at 21 months. My Pedi had no issues with it. We do our best to avoid getting her exposed to things. HEr 1st winter we didnt do much of ANYTHING. She actually has more mild colds than her older full term sister. She did have a tiny bit of premature lungs, but was only on C-Pap.
And, she had no other issues other than severe reflux (still a huge issue), and massive protien intolerances (still a huge issue).

Talk to your DR.... with having an older child, my preemie was exposed more than most probably... and shes just fine :)

Mom of a 33 weeker and we did the RSV shots for her first two winters. Guess what she got RSV when she was four go figure. I guess being a preemie makes you more prone to catching RSV even at four. She is five now and she has to use her inhaler when her allergies are bad or when she has a cold. So watch out for RSV it is scary. Even at four she was pretty bad off when we took her to the hospital her respiration and fever were so high it was scary. She sounded like she was panting. But we took her to Disney at 12 months we were just really careful about germs.

I would think that you would be fine. I had preemie twins (33 weeks) and we took them to Disney at 9 mos. Unless your DS has respiratory issues it is highly doubtful that he will be on synagis for a second winter. That is usually reserved for micro preemies. Also, keep in mind that just about all children get RSV at some point. Just be mindful of hand washing, etc while you are out in public. I wouldn't, and didn't stay at home though for fear of contracting RSV. You all have a life to live. Go and enjoy!:thumbsup2
