"Precious" - the movie..

Who has seen this movie? I noticed on tv that it will be out on DVD soon and though I rarely see a movie advertised that catches my attention, this one has.. It looks like it might be a very good movie - something I would enjoy..

If you have seen it, did you enjoy it? Is this based on a true story?

It is a great movie but I've got to warn you the subject matter is a little difficult to watch. this young lady literally goes through He$$ before the end. Acting is superb.

I taught in an inner city middle school before moving up here to the "wilderness" when DS was an infant. He's now 15, and when we watched this together, he looked at me in shock and said, "Is it REALLY like this?" For that reason alone, it's an important movie for people to see--too many people (especially teens) don't realize how good they have it. He sure didn't complain about his own life after that! Painful, but important...

if only for the tremendous performances by M'onique and Mariah Carey

I never thought I'd see someone use tremendous performance to describe Mariah Carey. Really?

I read the book in a couple of hours. At first I thought it would be hard because of the way it was written and the language. I got into it right away and it is very gritty and made me angry and sad.
I saw the movie and it is good and true to the book but the book goes into a bit more detail. I would read the book first then watch the movie if you can.
I HATED the mother and the awards are warranted.

DD got this along with alot of other nominated films from SAG months ago. Watched about 15 minutes of it and we turned it off. Not my kind of entertainment.

I'm sorry but no matter how "good" of a movie it is, I have absolutley no desire to see it. The evening news is grim enough for me. I really, really, really don't like being sad.

I went to Wal-mart on Tuesday night to buy Precious and Up In The Air, I ended only buying Up In The Air due to the trailer I saw of Precious.

My best friend and I saw it in theaters on a whim one night. We both walked out loving the movie but not wanting to see it again. It was a great movie but the story was a lot to take in. I would recommend it with caution.

Just in the short clips during the Oscars I could tell that M'onique should win it. Even down to the makeup...her teeth!

I dont think its a movie people have said they have "enjoyed"
it would not be a movie I would be eager to see

It was a phenomenal movie and I absolutely enjoyed it... that's not the same thing as saying it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It didn't make me cry (and I'm emotional). It made me angry more than sad. But I loved the ending and would most definitely watch it again.

She was phenomenal. SHE should have been nominated instead of Vera Farmiga. You won't even know it's her.

Did anyone realize that the male nurse was Lenny Kravitz? I read his name in the credits and I couldn't believe how I didn't recognize him!

I knew that I knew who he was, but I had to search the credits, too. Nice surprise!

She was very convincing as the concerned but strict social / welfare worker. Maybe I shouldn't have put her in the same sentence as Mo'nique, as Mariah's performance wasn't as Oscar worthy, but she did a really good job.

I thought Mariah's performance was Oscar-nomination worthy. I see a lot of movies, and nobody's performance in anything came close to being as good as Mo'nique's was.

There's more to the movie than just the bad stuff. It's not a constant barrage of horribleness. Paula Patton's character has the potential to really encourage people to make a difference in people's lives.

Worthwhile...I haven't seen the movie, but I think that word describes why I do want to see it...that it will be worthwhile. Almost seems like a Schindler's List sort of movie... you won't want to see it again, it will upset you, but it will be worth it, and you won't be the same afterwards.

That is exactly how I felt after watching Mississippi Burning. It didn't entertain me, per se, but I felt at the time that it was important, and thought provoking. I read Precious a couple of months ago. I purchased the book because I thought it would be important for my 15 yr old daughter to read as well. While I was reading it, I found the subject matter so shocking that I began to doubt if it was a good choice for her to read it. She picked it up one afternoon when I wasn't home and read it. I was a little embarrassed to think of my "little girl" reading that very graphic content.

IMO, not all movies are meant to be entertainment. I want to be challenged, introduced to new concepts, see things from a different angle, be stretched out of my comfort zone when I watch some films. There is a place for "fluff" entertainment and there is a place for movies similar to Precious, The Squid and the Whale, and Boys Dont Cry. They aren't entertaining stories; they aren't meant to make you feel good; but the stories they portray should be told. Some people may choose not to hear those stories and that's okay. I, myself, want to hear them. Those challenging films are the reason why I'm a huge movie lover.

This is exactly how I feel (and was going to add). Hotel Rwanda is another I would add to your list - a story that needed to be told. My DH on the other hand, is a definite "fluff" movie guy. He likes the happy endings. Needless to say, I will probably rent Precious while he is at work.

Me too!! Schindlers list was one of the finest movies I have seen and I thought I was pretty prepared for it, I mean I've seen holocaust movies before but it was a hard watch but absolutely moving.
Hotel Rwanda is an excellent example.

That's how I got to see it too I told DH that we are going to the SAG awards one day (he said he's only going when he's nominated)

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and Mo'Nique - did she ever earn that Oscar! So funny, when I saw Lenny at the Oscars, I was thinking "oh that's Lenny Kravitz", not even realizing that it was him in the movie
