"Precious" - the movie..

Who has seen this movie? I noticed on tv that it will be out on DVD soon and though I rarely see a movie advertised that catches my attention, this one has.. It looks like it might be a very good movie - something I would enjoy..

If you have seen it, did you enjoy it? Is this based on a true story?

I haven't seen Precious yet, but I am going to rent it this weekend.
I know that it isn't techinically based on a true story.
I was watching an interview with the writer of the book, and she worked as a teacher or a social worker, I forget, and she used the people she interacted with everyday and put parts of their lives together and made Precious.

I just watched this today on DVD and I can tell you that yelling is one of the nicer things her mom does to her. This was a very disturbing movie, and although I am glad I saw it, I don't ever want to see it again. The amount of "uplifting" was far outweighed by the "downers".

M'onique's portrayal of that awful woman was worthy of 10 academy awards. She was amazing.

I agree, the movie is difficult to watch.

The book is even more disturbing than the movie. It's raunchy yet captivating. It's an easy read that I found shocking yet very hard to put down.

It's out on DVD today! I want to see it, but seeing as it made my best friend cry who NEVER EVER EVER cries, I don't know that I can handle it. I get too emotional during movies.

I guess I may have been too harsh..it kind of balanced out at the end. Not a really "happy" ending, but satisfying and hopeful. You should see it if you are curious. You may not LIKE it, but you will be glad you saw it, if only for the tremendous performances by M'onique and Mariah Carey. If I didn't know ahead of time who was in it, I wouldn't have even noticed.

I am not an emotional person, although I do tend to cry at stupid things like Hallmark commercials. I didn't cry at all during this film. I wanted to punch Momma's lights out, but no tears.

ETA: I rented this at Redbox yesterday morning, so I am guessing it is in wide distribution by now.

I saw the star, Gabby, on Jimmy Kimmel last night and she is a lovely young lady. Jimmy said her movie is now out on dvd.


No thanks. Not interested in this movie with all its sadness.

I'm sure something exactly like Precious has happened to someone before, but its not based on a specific story.

It's honestly the best movie I've ever seen. It has elements of every type of movie, drama, horror, romance, even a bit of comedy. It's very inspirational.

The book is difficult to read, but amazing once you can learn the "language" (so to speak) of the book.

It had an uplifting ending, but it wasn't "yay everyone's happy, all problems are solved." It has the perfect ending in my opinion.

I kind of agree.

It's almost painful to watch... but in a good way. In a way where you're connecting with all of the characters, so you feel some of their pain.

I read the book, but have no plans to watch the movie. Really, really tough subject. I can't imagine watching it.

I just saw Precious this weekend and think that it is a really worthwhile movie to see. Having Worked as a teacher in the inner city at an alternative school (not nearly as nice as the one in the movie!) I saw many of my former students in that movie and think that many elements of this movie are so true for too many teenage girls out there. I think that it will help people to see many issues they may not normally notice when they see this movie and maybe think about ways to help the greater community.

I read the book a few years ago for a college course. It is hard to read but it's written well to combine grittiness with inspiration. I saw the movie a month ago and I thought it was well acted. I think Gabourey Sidibe should won the Oscar instead of Sandra Bullock.

Just in the short clips during the Oscars I could tell that M'onique should win it. Even down to the makeup...her teeth!

I just saw Precious this weekend and think that it is a really worthwhile movie to see.

Worthwhile...I haven't seen the movie, but I think that word describes why I do want to see it...that it will be worthwhile. Almost seems like a Schindler's List sort of movie... you won't want to see it again, it will upset you, but it will be worth it, and you won't be the same afterwards.

ITA!!! Even just from the clips I've seen of Gabourey's performance in the film I could see she deserved the award over Sandra.

I saw it last week at the movies and was disappointed. From the previews, I thought it would be better than it was. I did think the mother's performance was Oscar worthy, for sure, and was glad she won. The rest of it - eh.

I felt so bad and numb from what was going on that I couldn't really cry, I was very shocked by some scenes! I did tear up at the stairs fight scene, waiting to see what would happen to them. It's all so realistic, the movie draws you into it.

I'm not sure if I will ever be able to see it again, but I do think it's a film worth watching.

I agree, Mo'Nique was totally worth all the awards she got. Her performance in that final monologue alone was Oscar worthy.

I liked that there wasn't a "Hollywood-type" ending, that would have really brought the movie down.

Did anyone realize that the male nurse was Lenny Kravitz? I read his name in the credits and I couldn't believe how I didn't recognize him!

I'm a crier. I need nap after Rudy, cried at The Lion King,some songs, etc. This is one of those movies I'll probably watch in a few years. I really wanted to see The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and never in a million years would have suspected the ending. I don't know if I would have watched it had I known about the ending.
