We went in Feb (soooo missing it), stopped on US27 and saw quite a few camping sites. A lot were for RV's however seen a few tents.
I was wondering if anyone had camped or could shed a little light on the matter.
Thanks
I camped in a tent at Fort Wilderness back in April 1974.
I and 2 of my apartment mates from university drove down from Maryland to Orlando (stopping to pick up the sister of one along the way).
We brought our own 4 man tent (actually a 4 women tent) and of course sleeping bags. We did very basic camping (as compared to all the people there who come with amazingly well equipped RVs and the like).
we were assigned a campsite in a loop with public bathrooms and showers in the center of it (in other words, you walked back behind the campsite into the woodsy area of the loop to get to the bathrooms and showers). It was quite adequate and we were happy with the arrangement.
We weren't bothered by the heat, but it was only April, and also Orlando wasn't as hot back in the 70's as it is today, so take that into account.
While bugs are a serious problem in Florida, because WDW sprays so heavily, we didn't find it to be a problem when we were camping. But of course our tent had netting and all of that.
We really enjoyed camping at FW, although i think it's probably changed a lot since then (it's much bigger than it was then).
If you want to sleep in a tent, you have to bring your own.
Otherwise you have to bring your own RV, or else rent one of the FW cabins.
The rate for tent camping is the site rate. You pay for the site, just like if you brought your RV (it has all the hookups and everything, but we didn't need them). I think the current rate for a site is $39/night, which is higher than non-WDW campsites, but FW is definitely several cuts above the typical campsite (like jellystone, etc.)
i'm coming back to add one more thing to take into consideration..
if you're planning on going in the summer, in addition to the extreme heat/humidity, there is the monsoon like weather, which isn't the best situation when you're camping in a tent......
