I am looking to purchase my DD a pre-paid or disposable cell phone (not on any special plan, one where you pay for so many minutes of talk or text and get the phone like at wal-mart with no contracts). Any recommendations on a reliable one? Thanks in advance for any help.

We like the ATT go phones. No contracts, you can get cheap ones or fancy ones, or refurbished ones. I have bought a few off of the website for family members and they often come with a airtime card. If my kid wants unlimited texting it is only like $20 for the month. These days the kids seem to mostly text and IM and never really talk on it. I like that it has no strings attached, and if it gets lost/broken it is not a big financial loss.

If you and hubby are with Verizon/T-Mobile/AT&T, you may want to get one of their phones, as they offer somne free "in-network" calling plans.

Even though carriers like Virgin Mobile use the Sprint network, calls within Sprint are not free.

I've been using a T-Mobile pre-paid plan for six years now and have had no problems. I've had the same number all along but different phones over the years. Very happy with them.

I've used T-Mobile for years and love them. My current phone only cost me $30, and it's 10 cents per minute and 10 cents per text, though you get bonus minutes if you buy higher amounts all at once, so that can reduce your per-minute cost. Any minutes you buy are good for 3 months, but towards the end of the 3 months if you add more money before they expire then they roll over for another 3 months. If you put on $100 or more then those minutes are good for a full 12 months. I've never had a droped call and have always gotten a signal, and I've traveled to about a dozen different states, including semi-rual areas. Reloading is easy, you can do it over the phone or online.

We have been using Net10 for a few years.

It's $30 for 300 minutes and 60 days of service. The minutes roll over (I have about 2500 on my phone right now). Since I never use anywhere near the amount of minutes I buy, I consider it $15 a month for the service. There are other minute/days of service options. Each text costs half a minute.
