We have stayed at the Hampton, and it was nice, and very close to Disney, but last year we spent the night at the South Beach Inn, and I would vote for that again! What we liked was that it was in a different part of the island so we got to explore South Beach (Salty Dog, etc) before heading over to Disney. The room had a pullout in the livingroom (which the boys stayed on) and a seperate bedroom for us, as well as a kitchenette.
When we fly in the night before we generally stay in Savannah. We then do a bit of sightseeing, walk Riverwalk and have a nice night before we head to HH mid-day. In Savannah we've stayed mostly at the Marriott on the Riverwalk. Great area!

Gosh-I couldn't do that! We've driven from the airport after midnite to be on the island. Then right after breakfast, we're over at the resort. The only hotel we stayed at the night before, I'm afraid I can't recommend. Not that it was bad, but I don't remember the name! All I remember was that it was off Pope Ave further down than the Sea Shack.
I agree with podsnel. South Beach Inn is a neat place and gets you to a part of the island you might not visit otherwise.
It is slightly out of the way but you're still on Hilton Head.
