My daughter was hired as a cashier for a major grocery chain a few months ago, after they told her she was hired, they gave her paperwork to go to a lab corp and get drug tested. She has been working there ever since.
Today I was speaking with a friend whos daughter just went on an interview at the same store. This kid has been in trouble with drugs in the past. Anyway, the mom said the girl went for 2 interviews and will hear something next week (my daughter was hired on the spot) and also said she had already been drug tested. I said oh yeah she had to go to the lab...well the girl told her mother they gave the drug test in the employee bathroom at the store. I told the mom something didnt sound right about that. The mom is a nurse but was believing the daughter. I think any work place drug testing you have to go to a lab. I am leaving it alone, but what do you all think?

I had mine done at work but that was 20 years ago. Plus I work for a very large company that his it's own medical office.

They can seal it & send it to the lab. They've probably changed to testing at the store since your daughter was hired.

I was a hiring manager for many years at a company that required drug testing for all new hires. Job offers to prospective employees were not finalized until the results of the drug test were known. We gave the prospective employee a specific address of the lab where they were to be tested and we always encouraged these potential hires to do it sooner rather than later so we could get on with the process of putting them to work.

When I was hired at a grocery store (5 years ago) the HR person gave me a swab to rub inside my cheek and then I put it in a container and sealed it. They sent it to the lab and I was able to work immediately. Of course, if the test had come back positive, I would have been let go.

this was a urine test

DH gets random drug tested at work because he has a CDL. It's done at one of the offices not a lab.

I'm guessing your friend's daughter tested positive if they already tested her. I had to get tested for Target and did it a lab corp. I had to bring the results back to the store myself. But if they haven't called her then she is probably still having trouble with drugs and not being honest with her parents.

In all my life since going for my first job at 17 I have NEVER been tested for drugs. Why on earth is it so common over in the States?

Maybe because drug usage is getting to be more and more common. Any job, like CDL's that connect with dealing with the public are testable occupations. You don't want someone that is high on drugs driving your bus the next time you are at Disney do you?

Those test are conducted in the work place when it can be scheduled ahead of time. That saves time and money for everyone involved. Random tests are a surprise only to the person being tested. The names are drawn, by computer about a month in advance. That enables the company to schedule time for the test to be done with the least amount of hassle for everyone.

My son was tested onsite at a Temp Employment Agency this summer. They wouldn't send him out on jobs without it.

My DH works as a CDL driver for a major grocery chain. They always do a pre-employment drug screen, and also unannounced drug screens. All employees go to an occupational health medical facility to have this done. He also goes here to have his CDL physicals done.

It's becoming less common. My current job used to do urine tests at a lab, now they do the cheek swab in the office and send it off.
My wife's place started drug tests for applicants about 10 years ago, dropped them like a hot potato about 3 years ago. Someone tested positive, was denied a job. Turns out the positive was from a legally prescribed medication (not marijuana), she sued because she claimed it would be a violation of medical privacy laws for her to be forced to disclose what she was taking and why.
Not sure what the law says, but the company wasted no time settling the suit for an "undisclosed", and immediately dropped drug testing.

Mine was done in-house but I was applying for a job at the hospital so they have their own lab.

When I was finishing up school I had to do a drug screening in order to do my externship. The school has just got in these CLIA waived urine specimen cups that had the drug testing strips built in. you pee in the cup and a couple minutes later you read the strips on the side of the cup. They're a lot cheaper than paying for a lab to do the test, so maybe the store invested in them since your daughter applied.

I have been working as a physical therapist for 35 years. I just got a new job and had to go for my first ever drug screen. I was able to go to another nursing home than the one I that employed me. They have a specimen container that you pee in. It has special material on the inside that when a label is peeled off you can instantly see the results for several different drugs. I can see how if an employer had these containers they could do the screen instantly anywhere.

ETA, I just saw the post above mine and it sound like the same as I had.

We do oral fluid. It is done in the stores, by cerified managers, and must be done in view of a camera.
