Prayers, positive thoughts, & Pixie dust NEEDED!!

I was also going to suggest getting everyone you know to register as a marrow donor. It's so incredibly easy - you swab your cheek with a giant Q-tip and mail it in.

It's one thing to hear about people with cancer but when it hits close to home it becomes personal. A dear friend of mine just had a double mastectomy thanks to breast cancer and now I am all about promoting awareness and supporting Susan G Komen's walk for the cure.

See what you can do to mobilize friends and family to register as potential marrow donors. I personally think that cancer is one of those diseases that needs to be advertised and shouted from the rooftops, not one that should be fought alone behind closed doors. Marrow donors can save the lives of folks with cancer and if everyone was on the registry, cancer would take a serious beating. So get the word out! This is a great start. :grouphug:

Thank you so much. It breaks my heart that I can't do more for her. I've been unemployed for almost a year now so moral support & encouragement is what I have to give. Elijah started treatment today. They are not wasting any time. She has taken to facebook to post updates about everything so that the only calls they make are to immediate family (since we've been friends for 18 yrs, I am included in that call). I told her not to worry about calling me every time something new happens, just to focus on her little boy.

Her father died of a rapid, agressive Pancreatic cancer before Elijah was born, so she is no stranger to that ugly disease.

Thanks again.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend's son.
pixiedust: and prayers for all. :grouphug:

I have a co-worker who's son just got home after a bone marrow transplant and chemo for ALL - Acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

They used Caring Bridge http://www.caringbridge.org/ to keep everyone updated. They really liked the service and people were able to leave messages that really boosted his morale during his long months away from home (He had to be in Seattle for treatment).

Everyone wanted to help out if possible .. so his family asked anyone willing to, to register as a bone marrow donor - even though we may not be a match for him, we might be a match for another boy or girl in the same situation.

I would agree with Caring Bridge, we have had a couple of different people use it to keep everyone updated, but I think the best part is the messages left by others.

My daughter spent from age 4 to 10 in the hospital off and on for a type of Muscular Dystrophy. She is now married and has 2 children and is a teacher. But during that time one of the best things people did was to relieve me from the hospital. She may not want to right away, but since we would never leave our daughter alone, it was nice to have people you trust to stay with them. The gift card for food around the hospital is another thing that friends did for us. Just have faith things will turn out great.

Keeping them all in my prayers...

As a someone who has been where your friend is, (DD7 is a cancer survivor) All I can say is check in with her often. Let her know you are there for her.

I remember that GC to restaurants around the hospital was very convenient and helpful. They will be spending many days (all day) at the hospital. Also, I remember GC for gas was a huge help. I don't know how close they are to the hospital, but in our case we were within driving distance to Boston and drove in and out daily for a long time. Help with the cost of gas was a huge help.

Also, next time you talk to your friend, stay positive, upbeat, etc. Remind her the medical advancements in the treatment of cancer have come a long way. I have seen a lot of miracles happen during our many many days on the pediatric cancer floor.

Continued prayers heading their way....
