My 4 year old has just been diagnosed with a tumor in the bone of his left leg. The md here is Nj asssures me it is not cancer but we need to take him to another MD in Phily for a consult and the possible surgical removal and bone grafting. We are so glad that they feel it is not malignant but the thought of a big, painful operation on our little guy is killing us. Not to mention that we have a 9 week old daughter and Phildelphia is about 1.5 hr from here and I am nursing. We are going for MRI tues, and to Phily on thursday. I am trying to stay strong but not always easy, does anyone know of a clean, decent hotel around CHOP? Thanks friends for listening to me.

I am so sorry to hear that! Both my sister and I have children with medical issues. Mine needed open heart surgery as a baby (doing well now) and hers is on going hospitalization and other issues. I know this is a scary time for you. I know how hard it is to be strong when you just want collapse. I'll be praying for you and your son. :flower3:

Thank you! I do feel like I want to collapse at times but I am triying to stay strong. The thougt of anything happening to him is just too much for me.

I'm not able to help you for hotels in the area, but wanted to send you good thoughts and prayers.:goodvibes:goodvibes

Will be thinking and praying for your family. I spent a lot of time at CHOP and they are amazing. I think we usually stayed at the Sheraton University City.

Sending lots of good thoughts and pixie dust.

I work at a children's hospital and the best advice I can give is to take advantage of all the services they offer, which are different than what is offered by an adult facility. The philosophy is different, too. In a pediatric facility they treat the whole family and not just the child. If you need a quiet place to nurse the baby, just ask for it, if your son is going to be an inpatient for an extended time ask for Child Life services for him. And since most pediatric facilities are centrally located they are used to dealing with children and families that are far from home and have services to help stay in touch with the rest of the family and friends back home, just ask for it.

Lots of pixie dust headed your way. Some of the scariest moments are when you learn your child is sick in this sort of way. I wish you both well and a speedy recovery.

Just remember that it is okay to be scared, okay to cry, and okay to talk about it. CHOP will most likely have a service for parents to give support and a shoulder if you should need one. This is something that has become a standard of care in specialty hospitals. Please ask when you get there.

As a healthcare professional for over 22 years, I can truly say that if you keep positive hope and faith in your heart and you will see how that will help you all heal through this. Treat it as an adventrue and a learning experience and you will all make it through unscathed.

Thinking about you all.

Hugs and pixie dust coming your way! Please come here to vent and for support. You will always find it. :goodvibes

Thank you so much for the support and good advice. I am a rn but I work with adults, so I know enough for my mind to run wild, but I am not informed enough to know what to expect. I am trying to focus on the mri tues which will require iv sedation, I know he will be fine but, Wed is his graduation from pre_k and thur we go to CHOP. Step by step is how I need to take it.

Hi, just read your post. Living in the Philly area was I so happy you are going to CHOP> My other choice would be Dupont in Delaware. If I am not mistaken, the Ronald McDonald house is right at CHOP. Not sure of the criteria for lodging but you can call them and maybe they could recommend a hotel in the area. If not, send me a personal message and I will try to see if I can be of some other kind of help. Please let us know you DS first name so I can put her on the pray list at the parish where I work. I will also call his name into the Pink Sisters. They are a cloister order of nuns in Philly that do nothing but pray for special intentions. I am sure there is sunshine at the end of this storm. Keep the faith, God bless
