Hi everyone,
Just wanted to give everyone not on Facebook an update on Max's condition. He made it through the night, which was not expected to happen - so that's good news. He's listed in critical but stable condition at the moment. The big issue right now is sepsis. They are trying to get the infection under control, but its an uphill battle. I'm trying to take solace in the fact that AVS (Affiliated Veterinary Specialists) in Maitland are considered among the best facilities in the state. They seem competent and are not sugar coating anything. Walter and I had to make a decision yesterday on whether to put him down and we chose to allow a second surgery just to exhaust all options. We do have a DNR order in place though - I don't want to prolong his pain unless theres a light at the end of the tunnel.
This is all being complicated by the myriad of other issues Max has - Cushings disease, early stage kidney disease, thyroid issues and heart issues. Fortunately, all of these things have been well managed over the last several months, so his regular vet is a bit more optimistic than the surgeons have been.
Thanks again for all the prayers and well wishes. I'll keep you posted on how things are going.
Pete
