Hi all

Last year we had to rent a scooter for Granny because she coudlnt do all the walking..
Well it worked out great! We go the canopy to keep the sun off her head, but a problem we did have was Rain.
In Aug. So we are talking HEAVY daily RAIN!
LOL..

We tried to layer ponchos, umbrellas, etc.. But none of it worked out that good.

So we decided to look online for a Rain Cover Poncho thingy to fit over the canopy to keep Granny Dry.

We cant seem to find anyone to sell us one with out actually buying the Canopy, which we dont need since we rent the scooter. Anyone know a clear rain cover poncho, so granny can keep driving and keep dry? Thanks all.. The ones we saw on Amazon.com make it look like a little car.. HOW CUTE!! But 400+ dollars.. LOL, Way too much for her to use 1 time a year on vacation when she uses a scooter

I don't know of what you are talking about, but I have for my scooter a tiller cover that I can put my hands into and still drive. I used it this past May in their torrential rains and it kept my scooter tiller nice and dry. I then used a poncho for me and the rest of my scooter. I would drape the front over my arms and the tiller and the back over the back of the seat. It kept both me and the scooter dry.

I have found that a large Disney shopping bag fits over the tiller and is large enough that you can still operate the handles through it. I did have a problem with it blowing off if there was wind, but solved that by bringing along a large binder clip and clipping it near the bottom so it couldn't blow off.

I also used a large poncho over me and the seat and the rest of the scooter.

I know exactly what you are talking about but I have never seen anywhere you can rent one. I too would love to have one to use when I rent my scooter at WDW. Last May when we were there, we got 27 inches of rain the week we were there. No amount of ponchos kept the water off me or my scooter.
I hope someone here can help you find one!

Well, it's not clear... but you might want to consider a grill cover. Seriously. Buying one, I mean. Get measurements for the ECV from the rental company (length, width, ground-to-seat); measure granny from seat to shoulder in a 'hard' chair - like a kitchen chair. Shop for an appropriately sized grill cover. When you arrive, have her sit in the ECV and have a couple of people line up the open grill cover next to her (not over her head yet!). Mark the correct place to cut a small - honestly - hole for her head, maybe twelve inches across. Cut an "X" in the circle from edge to edge. NOW it's okay to 'try it on' her. See if that cut fits comfortably over her head and the cover lines up right AND that she can still drive - oh, yeah, you don't want a cover that hits the ground. One of those 'springform' ones, while more expensive, would probably be best.

I think you can make something homemade that would work.

The first thing that comes to mind is buying 55# clear garbage liners(bags). I have bought these; so, I know they are available. I would use velcro strips on the liner and the top of the canopy to secure it to the canopy. The same velcro could probably secure it to the arms of the scooter; so, it won't be blowing around. The velcro would allow you to get in and out and reuse it. You could probably use 2 sided carpet tape (could get messy) or shipping tape to secure it, as well. In that case I would think you will be reapplying it, here and there.

I would also talk to a few scooter rental companies. I remember seeing a scooter at Disney that reminded be of a little car. It was all protected with a clear plastic. It might not have been a rental, but you can ask a few companies. I would state you want something enclosed.

If you go to amazon.. and in the health care subject type
Scooter Cover For Electric Scooters

Thats wayyy to fancy for what we want you it gives you the idea, Kinda like a stroller cover for kids.. Its clear so they can keep looking out,

I was thinking of trying to sew something out of a clear tablecloth plastic and use some velcro.

Thinking something to sit on the top of the canopy, square and then make sides that go down to her seat area and maybe if I can get good measurements a flap of some kind that would angle out over her lap and the stearing part of the scooter..

If no one knows a place.. Maybe someone that owns a scooter with a canopy would be so kind to give me measurements of the canopy size, height, and then the size of the scooter so I maybe can make a simple cover for her ..

For my scooter I really just worry about the basics. I try to make sure I have a large (very large) Hefty trash bag to cover my seat with if I think it will rain and a few ponchos. I also keep a plastic shopping bag with me to cover the Tiller where the controls are. My understanding is that is the really important part to keep dry. In emergencies I have always been able to get someone from maintenance to give me a spare trash bag or two and/or ask for a shopping bag from a shop.

If it is pouring rain I will put on my rain jacket and hood and a poncho over it and over the back of my seat and my lap. Keep in mind the cheap ponchos are just that-- cheap. You will get better results with a more expensive one that is made of a heavier, more durable material. It will hang down better and won't blow around as much. And if I think it could rain when I park it to go in somewhere then I make sure I have my bags on the tiller and seat.

If I were walking I would be just as covered up as I end up being on the scooter with this (actually probably less !!) . The big difference from walking is that the tops of my legs would get very wet without the poncho, and of course dealing with a wet seat is also no fun. My seat is slip covered and is vinyl underneath so I can always just take the wet covers off and dry the seat with some paper towels/napkins and keep going. My feet get just as wet as my companions that are walking-- actually sometimes not as much since I am not stepping in puddles. But I also wear my Crocs most of the time so I air dry in no time.

Granny would not be able to stay 100% dry if she were not in the scooter, and unless she has very fragile health then a little wet won't hurt. If she really objects to being wet then it is probably best to find somewhere to wait out a storm. One advantage to a scooter is having a place to hold extras you wouldn't walk around with so maybe bring a small bag with some dry socks and an extra pair of dry clothes in a ziplock bag in case she is soaked and uncomfortable. My Grandma always has one of those "rain bonnets" that ties around the neck in her purse and puts it on at the first drop. It does a great job of keeping her head dry and is much more comfortable than the poncho hood. Looks like this:

I think the key here is to have higher quality stuff. A good heavy duty (non disposable) poncho -- look in camping stores/sections, and some strong trash bags (bring extras) should really be all you need. And they will be easy to carry and store without taking up too much room. If you can get strong clear trash bags then covering the tiller will be even easier because you can still see the controls. I don't have to see mine so I don't worry about it.
