I live in SoCal and received a Power Outage notification from SoCal Edison as well as from the Complex Manager at our residence.

Tonight from 10:00pm until 5:30am we will have no power in our entire Complex. :headache:

Now we are new-ish to CA (Summer '08) and this is a first for us. We have never had any notifications from National Grid for our MA home that they will be shutting off the power.

SoCal Edison sent us letters and have called several times to remind us about tonight.

*Safeguard your computers to prevent loss of data
*Turn off and unplug electronic equipment (tv's, dvd players, coffee machines)
*Minimize opening your refrigerator/freezer doors
*Fish tanks/clocks/alarms should be considered
*All entrance and exit gates to the Complex will remain open during this time
*All garages will not open during this time, so park outside of your garage

Our Complex has emergency generators that will light the elevators.

Why: Upgrading Infrastructure

Has any DISer's had this happening in their communities/complexs?

You'll be eating lots of ice cream tonight.

I've never heard of this. Why are they doing it, to conserve?
Oh, upgrading infrastructure, ok. Apparently they don't do it too often, thank goodness.
Hope it's not too hot.

 ICE CREAM!!!!

My DS said he was glad it is tonight and not tomorrow night because of the LOST finale.

We will be using our cellphones as an alarm for Wed morning.

No clue what Upgrading Infrastructure means????

Nice today, bright sun but a cool 70's!!! :sunny:

atleast you had notice. We were out of power on Friday and Sat for a storm that came through.

It has happened to me a lot of times. When I was growing up I lived in a small town in New Mexico the electric company that serviced our area would power outages at least once year but they do the outages around 11 pm at night and the outages would last at most four hours. I live in another city and the last planned outage that was in my area was about a year and a half ago. I got a notification a few days before and I was going of out town on business. The outage happened while I was gone. I live in a triplex owned by my uncle. He went and checked after the outage to make sure things were ok.

Yikes! I hope they have made provision for those families who depend on electricity to run medical devices. I use CPAP at night because I stop breathing several times an hour while I (try to) sleep. Losing power at my house would be serious, but I wouldn't die, I'd just have to stay up all night.:headache: But people who breathe with ventilators or have other special equipment--wonder what they're going to do?:confused3

I guess they better have back up generators.

I've never known there to be a planned outtage around my area. We have them occasionally from storms or other such problems. But never one that was planned. :confused3

It's not terribly uncommon here to have planned down times. We did have one infrastructure upgrade one, about a year ago. We have also had the "rolling blackouts" to conserve energy. Those usually only last 1-3 hours or so, and happen during peak usage hours.

I never gave that a thought.

I was in our Leasing Office last week and I happened to mention the upcoming power outage and as of last week they were going to try to halt it. Nope, Monday we all had noticed on our door confirming tonight's power outage. Edison has called and mailed everyone notices well over 2 weeks ago.

Did you mean to say during NON peak hours? :confused3
I wish that this was more for 1am to 5am....NOT @ 10pm! :sad2:

Guess you and your B will have to find SOMETHING to do by candlelight after 10pm... :rolleyes1

Doesn't sound ALL bad to me!

Make sure you do what you need to do before 10 p.m..

If anyone is a coffee drinker and will be drinking coffee after 10 or up at before 5 (and personally, I wouldn't "assume" that they will in fact have the work done by then), make a couple of pots and put them in thermoses - which have been preheated with hot water..

Showers before 10..
Laundry before 10..
Any food/snacks that you will need tonight or in the morning - if you need to use electrical appilances to cook them..
Anything that needs to be ironed..
Make sure everyone has a flashlight right next to their bed.. (Silly, but I put mine in my slipper so I can reach down and know exactly where it is.. LOL)
Call a relative for a "back-up" call in the morning - as opposed to relying soley on your cell phones (which I assume you are charging up right now..)
Anything else need to be charged? DH's razor, perhaps?

Good luck - and thank goodness it's not unbearbly hot out there!! :goodvibes

You're welcome.. :) Can you tell I like to "plan ahead"? :rotfl: Most members of my family are "last-minute Charlie's" and it drives me nuts!! ;)

No, the rolling blackouts are usually during peak usage hours to lessen the strain on the power grid. It saves more energy and money to shut areas down when the demand is highest.
