Powdered Formula through security?!

So I generally carry one of those 3 section containers with powdered formula measured out to just dump in a bottle and mix. I also have some in a small plastic container as "extra" just in case. This is how I "travel" with my dd 8 months day to day.

Now i'm wondering if this is the wrong way to try to travel through security at the airport on Saturday? I was hoping to not have to carry-on a large can of formula but wonder if I should just so it's labeled, unopened, no question what it is for security. Advice? Thanks!

I would take the unopened can. At the most they would test it, which involves someone sticking a testing strip in it. Which isn't my favorite idea for my child's food. I would just bring the unopened can and portion it out when I went through security. This is more a "better safe than sorry" approach in light of the "new" airport security.

I hadn't read anything about them not accepting powders now, even though that's obviously what was used recently. I checked the TSA website the other day and didn't see anything. That said, I did have a coupon today for a free box of the Similac tubes (Enfamil makes them, too), so I'm planning to bring them with us on the plane just because they're easier. The problem with those is that they're just for a 4 oz bottle (at least the Similac ones), so it's either that or an 8... our DD normally takes a 6, but I guess we'll just waste. :( I'm totally curious what you do, though! And hey, we'll be taking them for our Sydney, too! :)

Thanks. I guess I'll go buy an opened can to take since I don't want to risk getting to security and for some reason getting my formula taken away, or the family getting pulled aside for a more indepth search.

I'll be going to Walmart today to see how much the tubes are (wish I had a coupon!!!) but am sure they are pretty expensive so will probably end up carrying a small can through. Hope it fits in the backpack :lmao:

The tube packets were $9.17 at my Target for 16 packets (9.76 oz total), if that helps at all. The coupon was in a recent Sunday insert (I think maybe from December?) and expired 1/15. Have a great trip!!

I brought the pre-packed 4 oz Similac tubes on the plane and an unopened can in my checked in bag. I know that you'll be wasting a bit on the plane but the pre-packed tubes will allow security to see what it is because it is labeled vs your own container. Everything will be fine. Enjoy your trip.

you can take the formula, but remember you'll have to buy water once you get through security...

Just something to think about - my son was used to only powdered formula. One time I gave him the canned type because we had some samples from the dr's office. He had a horrible upset stomach because he wasn't used to the canned kind. In my case, I would have definitely had to get the small 4 oz packets of powdered formula. I don't know if your baby has both and can switch back and forth between the different types, but it is something to think about.

When I was flying out of Orlando a few weeks ago (before this latest terror threat) they took my container of body powder out of my carryon and tested it. They didn't stick anything in the container. They dumped a little bit out onto something and tested it that way. It didn't take too long, but since Heather and I were running late to catch our plane, it seemed like it took longer! It was probably only a minute or two. I'm just wondering if they will make you open the can of formula anyway if they are going to test it.

I don't know what it is about me, but I always get pulled over for further testing at the security check! I've just come to expect it anymore!

When we flew down in November, I took 2 prepared bottles, the three-part container with loose formula AND a sealed container of formula. I wasn't questioned about anything. None of the formula was tested.

I also took an empty ziploc bag that I put ice into once we got through security for the 2 prepared bottles, and we bought 3 bottles of water for the 3 of us. We only needed one bottle for the 2 1/2 hour flight, but I was concerned about delays. Better safe than sorry.

In our checked luggage we packed a hard plastic gel pack and soft 6-pack cooler to take to the parks. Our daughter likes her bottles right out of the fridge so our challenge was actually to keep things cold. I was tempted to try to take the gel thing through security, but decided it wasn't worth the risk.
