Potty training question

ok...I am potty training my twins. They turned 3 in June. We are late training due to constipation issues and a family vacation. We're going with the bare butt method. Bailey has picked it up great. 3 days and she is day trained. Taylor has just decided to hold her pee forever. She has had a couple success and a couple accidents. She was very excited with the success, and somewhat indifferent to the accidents. Seriously though, she has held her pee ALL day. I don't know what to do. I've potty trainined my first 3 kids but this is the first time I've pushed the issue (had a deadline). They need to be potty trained for preschool in Sept.

Not sure exactly what to tell you, except that DD19 trained herself kind of. I had bought her all kind of pretty panties with her favorite characters on them and told her that when she turned 3 she would have to wear them because they didn't make diapers for 3 year olds. I woke her up on her b-day and told her happy b-day and she said "better get the panties out"... that was it. At that age, they know what they are doing and she really didn't want to wet her princess panties! The princesses wouldn't be happy!

just the other day dd was asking if it was easier raising boys or girls-i told her that at least when it came to potty training (in my experience)-girls were easier. she asked (rather smuggly) "why, because girls are smarter and pick things up faster?"-to which i replied "heck no, girls can be bribed! you just pull out those pretty princess panties and tell them that they can't wear them unless they use the potty and it's a done deal"

I nakey-butt trained my 3 youngest, and when my twins were 2 1/2, my dd passed the nakey-butt test (no more than one accident), but my ds didn't. He went back in diapers for 3 months, she trained that week. He passed the test 3 months later, and was trained in 2 days. HOWEVER, I have found there is a window, and it's under 3 years. My kids loved Once Upon a Potty DVD - give it a shot.

No diapers, no panties, just bare butt. Just like it sounds.

Worked for my oldest. Youngest much more stubborn and would hold her pee until panties or diapers on. She had the strongest bladder I've ever seen. I even pushed fluids on her. It just went on and on.

it is the method that professional carpet cleaners (or in our case w/ ds-carpet salesmen) love.

let the kid go au natural-so the ramifications of not using the potty is immediatly apparant to them


btw-we tried once upon a potty for ds, it just started him pointing to his private parts and repeating the lines from video, and bending over to show us (and anyone within eyeshot) just like in the video we scrapped it and opted for the bear in the big blue house potty training episode video.

Hi. I am potty training my 2 1/2 yr old boy/girl twins right now. I put them in underwear (the thick kind) two weeks ago an never looked back. They wear rubber pants at naptime and in the beginning, I would put the rubber pants on them when we went out somewhere just in case of an accident. Two weeks later, and Zoe is in regular panties and has had one pee and one poop accident since being in underwear. She is basically potty trained now, even at night,,I get her out of bed around 11:00 and she goes potty and straing back to bed. Sam is doing great with no pee accidents, but we are still having poop accidents with him, and even though I get him up at night to potty too, he still wakess up wet.

We are doing pull ups at night right now, but ai suspect Zoe will even be giving those up soon. Even cleaning up Sam's accidents I am so happy that I decided to just go for it. If a child shows readiness signs (hiding to potty, able to hold it for at least an hour, etc) they can learn to go!

In the beginning I did us a timer and have them go ever 30 minutes. dI t worked well and gave them many chances for success. now I try to watch Sam like a hawk so I can try to catch him when he has to poop. Other than that, they are starting to tell me when they have to go (except foro Sam's poo) and I try to make sure we go potty every hour or so. Good Luck! But I am checking out the DVD's mentioned so far. We're still a little early for potty training (19 months), but I figure the DVD's to get him familiar with it, and a training potty to get used to sitting on it will help out when he's ready to start.

You are too right... girls are easier to bribe but not easier to potty train. DS20 was potty trained before he was 1 1/2! I just let him "water the plants" and he loved it!

Actually, with the nakey butt method, if they have more than one or two accidents, they're not ready. I found we had WAY fewer accidents nakey butt than underwear!

There was no way I was doing the bare butt method (but a friend did it with her twins).

My twins kind of worked it out themselves. DS, for some reason, figured it out on his own pretty early. A little direction and reinforcement with M&Ms and he never looked back. He never had accidents, either.

DD took longer and was more difficult, but she saw her brother going and getting M&Ms and she wanted a piece of the action, too. (I don't think she was really ready, but she wanted to try.) I remember having to pack several outfits for her for outings, and I remember thinking it was a lot easier when she was in diapers. But I did buy her some pretty underwear and all that, and reinforced with Skittles, and I took to keeping a (well padded!) potty in my van for convenience while we were out as when she felt the urge, I wanted to get her right on the pot. It took quite a while but she finally got it. She had lots of accidents.

I think my best advice, in retrospect, is to just treat each child as an individual and let them go on their own timetable as much as you can. Just because they're the same age or a certain gender doesn't mean they're both ready at the same time or one's more ready than the other.

Update...

Bailey is definately day trained. She basically trained bare butt in one day (1 accident). I put her in a pull up today because we were going to be out all morning and early afternoon. She peed on the potty at Grandma's twice and then held it the entire time we were out to lunch. As soon as we got home she sat on the potty and went. Her pull up was still dry.

Taylor is doing better on the back end than the front end. She peed in her pull up at some point today...but sat on the potty and had a back end success as soon as we got home. I think she knows when she has to pee but seems to have trouble making herself release (sorry TMI). Her solution is to just hold it ALL day. I guess if she doesn't actually have accidents at preschool, they won't have any reason to question whether she is potty trained....plus she still has almost 3 weeks to catch on.
