Potty training at Disney World

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have a question. Those of you who don't ever use Pull-Ups for your kids, what did you do if you had a kid who was too big for regular diapers but too young to potty train? I think I'm going to be in that situation soon with DS. Thanks!

Back when ds was training (and I thought he would never get it- he was 3 1/2)they made size 6 diapers that were huge. Not sure if they still do (that was about 11 yrs ago).I think they were pampers. My dds have always been so tiny they only made it to size 3 or 4 diapers before training.

Thanks, blessedby3! He's in size 6 Huggies right now, so I'll check and see if Pampers are bigger. He's 16 months old, so we're not even close to ready to potty train yet. I am envisioning duct-taping two diapers together to fit him.

I haven't read all the replies, so I don't know if this has been suggested. The only thing that worked for our son was to have him go bare bottom. He was being lazy and didn't want to use the potty, but once we put him in only a long t-shirt, he started using the potty. My mom and grandma also gave him money as an award for him to put in his Disney World spending money container. He was potty trained within a couple days.

My daughter is 29 months. She decided about 3 weeks ago that she was going to be a big girl. We went and let her pick out her panties. She had a start of an accident the first day (pee). She finished in the toilet. However she was not ready to go #2 in the toilet. So after a few days I finally asked her if she wanted a diaper to go poo in and she said no. But she was going around holding her butt. lol.. she did finally ask for the diaper. The only other accident she has had was when I left her with my hubby her dad and he took her to the basement and had no potty seat for the toilet. She does not ask she goes all by herself. She does now go #2 in the toilet but she refuses to use the potty seat for it. I swear one day she will fall in but it is what she wants. I have began adventure out with her and she does fine in public. I still use diapers (Pampers size 7) for naps and nighttime. At naptime she wakes up if she goes. But at nighttime she sometimes wakes up and asked to go to the potty. I am just letting her do whatever and I am not forcing anything. I have put her in pull ups a few times but it has not made her regress. Usually she would wear them when we went somewhere and then as sooon as we got back she would take them off and put her panties on..

We do plan on going to Disney sometime in the near future and I will probably not put her in pull ups.

Actually he is close if you want to do it. My DD was completely trained by 18 months and my DS was well on the way. There is another thread going on about kids that were trained at this time, so don't automatically dismiss it.
If you don't potty train his body will probably change as he gets running around and often kids go down a diaper size as their bodies change.

Try switching to cloth diapers? They run in much more flexible sizes and they also let the child feel when they are wet so potty training tends to come faster.

Maybe consider the "goodnites" that are intended for older kids that bed wet. Not ideal as I am sure they are expensive but reality most kids are not ready at 16 mo, though it is true that some are . DS trained righted before two but that was before any of our friends kids did. DGS was almost 3.

I second the "pull ups over undies" we did that for long car trips where there is no potty to be found for long streches of the trip. My kids did fine. I would also recommend a preemtive strike...Have Buzz deliver a great new package of underwear that he needs to keep in "pristine" condition. A fancy package sitting on the kitchen table one morning and a personalized note explaining that buzz wants a full report on how it is going when you arrive. Perhaps the extra incentive will be enough to help him cross the finish line!

On a side note, on Thanksgiving, Santa delivered a pair of underwear to our house with a note saying that they needed to be kept clean and dry by Christmas. There was an extra reward offered as part of the deal. Literally, overnight the child was trained.

Yes, the pull ups have never been a favorite of mine. He has never seemed to be any different in either pull ups or diapers. In fact, he always insisted they were diapers and never believed us when we said they were "big boy underpants" "special diapers" and the other things we tried. To him it seems pull ups equal no training and underpants equal potty (except poop!). No accidents today with pee-pee but poop again.

I have the cheap underwear (got that today) so we'll see how it goes and pray for a miracle over the next 2 days. We have pull ups coming to the Wilderness Lodge so I have that option too. I think I may pull up him in pull ups until his poop (he always poops at the same time) and then switch him to underpants.

I'm currently potty training two young 3-year-olds. My DD pees and poops in the toilet consistently (only 1 accident in 3 weeks), but my DS has had an accident nearly everyday. My DS refuses to poop in the toilet and often says he doesn't need to pee, but we make him try (and usually he is completely full and definitely needed to go).

We are going to WDW in May and I'm not sure if he will be trained by then because he is so resistant. He stays dry at preschool/daycare, but always has accidents in the evening (usually while I'm making dinner or cleaning after dinner and can't keep tabs on him as well). I plan to take training underwear and cover them with the plastic panties (all bought at BRU) to help contain messes. My DS has never had poop leave his pants and rarely wets enough to soak his pants. I also have green diaper disposal bags ready to toss underwear that is too messy to keep--it keeps everything sanitary for us, other WDW guests, and the cleaning staff.

We do use pull-ups for naps at home and nighttime. I will be using pull-ups when we fly to and from Orlando. They haven't flown since 9 months and will be too excited by everything I'm sure to remember the potty. I'll have enough to handle without worrying about two toddlers soiling themselves 3-4 times that day. We've used pull-ups on a couple of days/half-days when necessary and it had no effect. They did their training the same the following days with no additional resistance.

I wouldn't count on any miracles but I do think putting him in a pull up until he poops is the best idea so far! Or for instance is he poop after lunch, put him in undies in the AM, change into pull up at before lunch, then back in undies after poop! Be sure to bring gallon sized zip lock bags (can be the dollar store brand) to put that poopy pull up in before the garbage!

Your DS may not be ready yet although your DD is.

My DS was 3.5 close to 4 before he began training and at 4.5 we are still working very hard every day on no accidents. All the while DD2.5 potty trained immediately upon returning from Disney in December, had both peeps and poops down and maybe 1 accident a week (usually because she can't get her pants down quick enough).

Because we started training him at 3 for preschool we spend almost 8 months of unsuccessful training. I just wished I had realizes I was beating my head against a brick wall and to relax and let him take the lead.

I am training now. Fingers crossed my son will be done in time for our trip. I have one of those toddler seat covers that fold up. I drop it into a Ziploc and stash it in the diaper bag. I agree with the above poster, if you know about when he'll poop, make sure he is in a Pull-Up. I wish kids weren't so resistant to doing that business in the toilet. Sigh.

My dd will turn 3 during the our trip in a couple weeks! My dd is 98% trained. She wears undies all day and for the last 3 weeks we have been pull-up free at night. She has wet her bed at night 3 times out of the 21+ days. No accidents rarely during the day. I am in the same boat b/c I just don't know what to do.

I think for us I am going to go back to Pull-Ups for the week we are at Disney. I just can't have her wetting the bed on vacation! (She is sharing a queen bed w/ big sister who is 12 & she will freak out if little sister has an accident in the bed ...).

During the parks I think I might try and have her wear undies and see what happens. I just don't want to be changing wet clothes all day b/c she is excited and won't go on the potty or forgets to tell me she needs to go.

I know wearing pull-ups is not going to cause her to backslide on PT at all. More of a convenience for us I guess.

Iam sorry if I am reposting a question but, does Disney have automatic flushing potties? My toddler is super scared of these and will not use the bathroom if they have them.

They do. Lots of people recommend using post its to cover up the sensor. That is a GREAT trick

I just thought I never told anyone how it went and to thank for all the advice and ideas. It went great. I put him in underwear until lunch then put on the pull up until he pooped (about the same time at 2ish) and then back in underwear. I brought the ziplocs too and had one accident but it was in the bathroom almost there.

Now my girl is currently training. We leave for Disney in 36 days and in one week she has gone from nothing to doing almost everything in the potty so I'm hoping this won't be an issue. I did tell her that Mickey would be happy if she was potty trained when we went (it will be her birthday, too) and I think that has stepped it up a bit.

If they are not, you may be able, after wiping as much as you can off with paper/wipes, to rinse them out in one of the bathroom sinks (I do this at home, but haven't had to do it elsewhere yet). If you choose this, though, make sure that you bring clorox wipes or something antibacterial like that to wipe down the sink after you're done (and make sure you have those wipes out in the open so you don't get strange looks).

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not rinse out soiled underwear in a sink that I will use to wash my hands or my DS's hands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
