Okay, all you experts out there...I have a question!

This afternoon, my DD peed in her potty for the first time! :dance3: My mom says that she should wear underwear now, knowing that she will have some accidents, because she's used to peeing in her diaper. This seems like the jump-in-with-both-feet approach. I don't mind cleaning up pee and poop, but I wonder if it's too soon for underwear.

My other girlfriend says to leave her in her diaper during the day for another week or so until she gets more practice.

Some people swear by pull-ups, some of my friends say to skip them all together.

I'm confused! The only thing I know for sure is that I'm gonna leave her diaper on at night.

What worked for you?? :worship:

Moving straight to underwear is what worked with both of my kids. Day and night actually. Even though we went to pullups at night ultimately, when initially training we did underwear 24 hours a day so there was no confusion.

Did she say she had to go before you put her on the potty? If so, then she is probably ready for panties. If not, it seems to me that you will be cleaning up a lot of accidents. Each kid is different, though. It can't hurt to try. Just don't get frustrated if she doesn't get it right away. It was months after my older daughter first peed in the toilet that she was ready to be in underwear all day long.

I let DD choose. She chose panties because she "wasn't a baby anymore."

I did pull-ups at night for about 6 months, when she convinced me that they, too, were for babies.

I've trained 5 kids - the first 2 at the age of 3, traditional underwear/pullup method, took FOREVER. Trained the other 3 at the age of 2 1/2, nakey butt, and were done in under a week! Nakey with potty in room, if more than 1 - 2 accidents, put the diaper back on - not ready. If ready, after 100% (day or two), put in PANTS, no underwear (too early - feels too much like a diaper, which they've been peeing in her entire life). After a few days 100%, try underwear (LOOSE!).

It's SO much easier this way! :cool1:

Wanted to add that day and night training happen at different times for most kids, so use a diaper at night (usually they're physically day ready before night ready).

I work in a preschool class and we always have kids in various stages of potty training. We don't considered kids to be trained unless they can verbalize when they have to go and not go until they get to the bathroom. If they go whenever you take them but they can't or won't tell you when they have to go, they're not trained. We say those kids are scheduled trained but not fully potty trained. I wouldn't necessarily put underwear on a child after the first time she uses the toilet. If she can recognize the urge to go and either tell you or take herself to the toilet, then she's ready.

If she went on the potty, and was comfortable, and was happy with herself... Take away the diapers! Completely ;)

You won't know if she is truly ready, or if this was a one-time-wonder unless you try!

I very highly disagree with using night-diapers.
I would not do this unless she demonstrated that she simply is not going to physically/naturally get thru the night without them.

Setting up mixed messages, and a 'crutch' is the wrong way to go.

I can't tell you how many stories I have heard, (including my own experience with my son using night diapers to go number two, and then developing toddler incopresis) where night diapers backfired.

By the time I realized that my son WAS indeed capable and ready to go without wetting the bed on a regular basis... It was too late.

Good Luck!

And, congratulations on the potty training!

underwear (or naked) while training at home, pullups if we had to leave the house and go grocery shopping or the like, and at night.
