Potty training advice for children w/ developmental delays.

OP...I am in the same boat as you (except my son is Autistic)...so I am reading your thread with great interest.

It sounds like you've gotten some great ideas...and I may just borrow some of them :goodvibes.

GL with the potty training!

I could have written this, OP! My son has no language at all though, sensory issues, on the spectrum. He uses some signs and PECS. He can sign toilet, but not when he has to go. He has a couple of months until he's three, so I'm not sweating it too much. I think I'll make him a pecs story card, though I need to figure out how to get him to tell me when he needs to go.

But, he is terrified of sitting on the toilet and won't sit on a potty chair. Hopefully this will change with age.

BTW, If heard so many things, but how do you potty train a boy? Sitting or standing?

I started out having him sit down...but quickly he wanted to stand like daddy lol. Maybe give that a whirl

We went out today and he stayed dry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even in the middle of playing asked to go potty! :cloud9::love:

Returned those pull ups and got a toy story 3 potty seat and stool. He even got a little prize at the store for staying dry!

It's nap time So I'm pretty sure he'll go while he's a sleep but soo far a GREAT DAY!

How do you get them to use the potty at nap time and bed time?

LOVE THIS! Thanks!

You're welcome! Send me a PM if you have specific questions.

I am working with a friend and her little guy with the same issue- fear of the toilet. She first rewarded him just for sitting for a minute (use a visual timer) and then increased the length of time in one minute intervals. He is now going on the potty most of the time while they are at home!

I would have him sit. My typically developing 6 year old son gets distracted and misses his target sometimes. ;) You also can get lucky and have a #2 slip out and you are much better off if he is sitting! Make sure he feels stable on the toilet- use a little potty chair or a smaller seat with a stool so he isn't afraid of falling.

Wow! What timing! As we speak, I have two little boys, sitting naked on towels on my floor, eating popscicles and waiting for the timer to go off for the next potty practice. My one son just turned 4 and is severely apraxic and my other just turned 3 and has some processing issues. Don't know how this is going to go (I go into spurts of trying this full force, and then give up from frustration, lol!)

I've tried underware, they just pee in it. Hoping the naked thing works. I have also got M&M's and swedish fish in the bathroom for rewards...m&M's for trying and the fish for if they go. So far, the fish are unopened. :rotfl2:

I have also told them that they cannot have any DS or Wii time until they go. This should be a good motivator, but only time will tell. I'm hoping SOMETHING works this time...at least for my oldest. Maybe we should all become potty buddies together? LOL!

Good luck to all of you! :wizard:
