We are going to a family picnic/potluck tomorrow. I called my mom to see if she needed something specific. My mom is supplying friend chicken and corn on the cob for about 75-100 people. She told me that a lot of people were bringing dessert, so something else. I can hear talking in the background.
My sister told my mom that I needed to bring Mediterranean pasta salad, BLT salad , jello jigglers, and 7 layer bars. The pasta salad I was planning on bringing but will cost me around $40 for ingredients( Kalmata olives, Artichoke hearts, feta etc..) I was thinking about jello because my kids and nephews love it.

I asked my mom what my sister was bringing.....Baked beans.

I should of known. We were invited to my sister's for dinner. I asked what I could bring. She told my I could give her half of the money. I asked her if she was going to give half the money when she came over my house for 4th of July BBQ a few days later.
We ended up bringing margaritas over.

I wouldn't take all that food, especially since your sister is just bringing baked beans.

Make the jello for the kids and the pasta salad you had planned on. Question--will the olives, artichoke hearts, etc get eaten or will there be a lot of them left in the bowl at the end (they wouldn't get eaten in our circle)? If you think there will be a lot left, cut down on the amount you put in to help with the cost.

Just make a simple macaroni and tuna salad.

All you need is a couple of boxes of elbow macaroni (or any other small pasta will work)
Couple cans of tuna packed in water (drained)
Dice up some celery
salt and pepper
Miracle Whip

Mix all together and walah! you are done! Everyone seems to like this.

There will be no pasta salad left. It is a favorite and gets many requests. Last year, we ran out.

My aunt makes something like this. Everyone seems to enjoy it. She puts hard boiled eggs in it, too.

She usually makes this for her potluck dish.

What i would do is dice the olives and artichokes to make them stretch-you still get the flavor. Also add regular black olives-they taste good and are cheaper :)

That was my DMIL she always took baked beans and deviled eggs to every holiday or pitch-in there was. It wasn't because she made wonderful ones, it was because she is cheap! I will take baked beans and eggs, but I will also always take a meat or two plus at least another side or salad or dessert.

Let them know you are bringing pasta salad and jello. Offer your sister the BLT salad recipe so she can bring it with her baked beans. You don't need 7 layer bars since lots of people are bringing dessert.

I would guess your sister is thinking two things. 1. She likes those foods. and 2. She likes the way you make them. She appears to be totally clueless that she is asking something of you that is unfair. I would keep pointing out fairness by saying you can each bring the same amount.

Insist on fairness. I'd just keep asking what she's bringing. When she names one thing, say "then I'll bring one thing too, I'll bring...."

TOO Funny. The other thing my sister likes to bring is deviled eggs.

Yum

Your salad sounds delish...can you post the recipe ? :)

Rotini pasta-tri colored
1 bottle Greek dressing
1 can artichokes
1 pk sun dried tomatoes
1 jar Kalmata olives
feta
green pepper- sliced
cucumber

I sometimes add a can of Chickpeas to stretch it further.
Sometimes, summer sausage, fresh parsley

I would love this stuff. I am sure that you know your family and know what they like. Now the tuna and pasta salad not happening in my family, but they would love your pasta salad with the olives and artichokes. My son and I would actually fight over it. It could turn ugly with all the fork stabbing and such. :lmao:

Seriously, I would just make your pasta salad and let it be done.
