postpone summer olympics update on post #18

What are the repercussions for postponing them exactly one year? I mean, we only have them once every four years anyway, so it doesn’t mess up next year’s plan.
I’m sure there would be disappointment, but next year seems like a good option.

Would they allow those who already qualified to compete next year? Or would they hold all new qualification trials next year?

I don’t know, but it looks like Australia might be pulling out next.

Postponing for a year would not have any impact on the 2024 Summer Games, planning would be underway for those at this point.

As to who who compete a year later that would be up to the individual countries as to how they operate their teams. I would guess if an athlete could still meet the standard, they would be able to compete. The other question would be how many of the athletes would still be able to compete. For some, they may not be in a position to train at the required level for another year.

By "at any cost", I hope they mean financial.
Yeah, NPR did a lousy job of following up on the headline. The NBC news story was better as is this article;
Organizers, IOC Trying to Remove Doubts Over Tokyo Olympics
"At any cost" meant financially to get the proper safety protocols in place and at the cost of spectators - going so far as to say there may not be anybody in the stadium besides the athletes. The story on TV also said the athletes may not stay in the Olympic Village, and may only go there under very controlled conditions. Fingers crossed, hoping things continue to improve, a vaccine is available, and almost none of that will be necessary. Olympic athletes are very much like High School students though - most only get one shot at this, so very glad to see Tokyo and the IOC are supporting them instead of outright cancelling.

Seems a bit early to make this announcement. It is not yet known what state the world will be in next year. They could have an earthquake that completely demolishes the Olympic venues that make the games impossible completely outside of Covid.

I seem to recall that early on in the whole covid crisis, Japan/IOC insisted the 2020 Olympics would NOT be postponed then later folded their cards on that one. Where the global situation on covid will be in 2021 is anyone's guess at this point. NO ONE knows if it will be safe to have athletes gather from around the globe much less have sports venues packed with spectators. The Olympic organizers can speak optimistically about the 2021 games. but have no better insight into where we will be globally with covid in July, 2021 then anyone else.
