How very sad! I'm like you, I would have cried as well.

Big Hugs to you! :grouphug:

OMG - that's truly terrible. As the guy in the fam who fixes the computers (I am a pro so I can be trusted) I cringe anytime someone says "My nephew..." or "my son..." We all gotta learn somehow but a lot of times people just dont understand the impact of what they are doing with a computer.

I am truly sorry to hear about that.

I'm so sorry... I think I will now be burning my photos to CD today, something I have been putting off for a while.

I certainly understand how upsetting this is. Guess this is a good lesson for EVERYONE to make back-up copies of our important stuff on our computers. This reminds me of the Sex and the City episode where her computer crashes and she looses everything. My DH accidentally taped over our only copy of my DH's first few minutes after birth. Over a decade later and I'm still upset. :grouphug:

 OMG....I think I would be throwing up for hours if I lost my HD!! I have an external HD to back up but I don't do it as often as I should! I feel for you!! :badpc:

I think there is a way to get the pictures you have deleted off you memory card from your digital camera. I am not 100% sure about this though.

Some friends got back from a cruise and one of their memory cards corrupted itself while downloading. They were panicked that they had just lost over 400 pictures that they couldn't easily get back again. A half a day of working, I found some software that recovered all but 3 of them. They now make copies of everything really quickly and change out cards frequently to ensure that panic attack doesn't come again.

I've been there, trust me. Its a horrible feeling. Now EVERYTHING is on disk, maybe several times.

I'm no pro on the subject, but there may be a way for you to recover the files. I'd give you a walk thru if I knew how, but I don't have the slightest idea. I think you should pull your telephone book out and call around to see if any of the computer stores (I'm not talking Circuit City, but rather local business owners who operate in most towns across the country) and see if any of them can maybe help you out. It might cost a bit, but you may be able to recover all of them. If said portion of the hard drive is not written over, I think you should be in good shape. You did mention someone coming over though, so it could depend on what they did to your computer. Did they reinstall everything from scratch?

Oh I'm so sorry. I can imagine how you feel. I would say 90% of my younger son's pictures are only on the computer. I would be devasted to lose those. I'm going to have my DH make copies tonight.

Aww, that stinks!! I would be so upset if that happened to me!

Just for future reference I upload all my pics to shutterfly. They let you store an unlimeted amount there. I have been doing this for years and have never had a problem. I do buy stuff from them from time to time but not often enough to justify their cost of storing my pics.

I saw a story on TV about companies who will recover files and put them on a disk for you. Do an internet search also.

It depends on the virus. It if overwrites the files, like the recent Wife.D/Nyxem virus, they can not be recovered. It they were simply deleted, then perhaps they can be recovered. It all depends on the virus. Now that you learned the hard way, here are the steps you should take on all home computers:

- Install an anti virus program (McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky, AVG) and keep it updated. Only use on AV program.
- Install an anti spyware package (Spybot Search&Destroy, Microsoft Anti Spyware, McAfee anti spyware) and keep it updated. You can use more than one anti spwyare program.
- Install a Pop blocker (Google has a good one); Windows XP SP2 has one built in
- Check out Microsoft's new OneCare security offering
- Back up your critical data (a little late for this one)

Don't complain about the cost or the effort. Just do it...

Sorry :badpc:

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that!

All may not be lost though. My best friend’s husband accidentally messed up their computer, then he formatted the hard drive. My husband (the computer guru in our household) was still able to recover most of their picture files. There is still a chance that they are not lost. Send me a PM if you’d like more info. My DH might be able to help walk you through what to do.
