We are planning a trip the end of October in celebration of my husband's return from Iraq. We've been lots of times, but I would appreciate any advice on how to make the trip relaxing for him! We're bring out two kids, aged 10 and 13 and staying at Shades of Green. I've been lurking on DIS for a while now and have really enjoyed reading everyone's input and ideas!

Being a male, I'm give you my opinion of a great stay and what I hate...........first of all, I do not like schedules......nothing worse than being on a clock.....we got to be here, we got to be there.....food at this place at this time. I'll eat when I'm hungry. My second big deal, I can only eat so much restaurant food...hence, we make a grocery stop in route and load up on sandwich fixings and snacks plus beverages. Nothing better than making a couple of home made sandwiches, filling the cooler with beer and relaxing at the pool during the heat of the day. Finally, parks....I'm not one to live and die, opening to close in a park. Early morning is the best time for me....early riser and ready to go after a full breakfast (important meal for me) then do the parks as the attractions come and book out noonish when the heats up and the parks are quite full. Pool picnic time! Relax, no chasing to other resorts to gawk or shop, lounge around the pool and enjoy then I'm ready for an evening of parks again, love the fireworks at EPCOT and MK, then pool at the resort late at night, couple glasses of wine (grocery stop purchase again) and beach movie then bed.

I'm a simple man, like simple pleasures and being at easy and fly by the seat of my pants. Vacations aren't a marathon, don't want to try to get everything done, heck if we miss a park, who cares! We're coming back. We've done 43 trips so far all on this premise and no objections from wife, if she wants to shop, she goes to DTD by herself. I'll make DTD one night when we visit POFQ, for meatball sandwiches and Scat Cat Club entertainment. We'll boat from there to DTD, make a walk thru, maybe a movie and then bus back to our resort.

That's it in a nutshell ( rather big nutshell ) but that's what keeps me happy...free time....lounging...and going at a relaxed, leisurely pace and enjoying the surroundings and atmosphere in WDW. Just one married man's opinion.

You made some great points. I was already wavering on cancelling our ADR's, especially since we'll be there during Epcot wine and food. I think he'd really enjoy trolling around the Epcot trying a beer from every country! I'll try to control my inner overscheduler!

We went during my DH's 2 week R&R (he was away 13 months total). He just acted like a kid and wanted to do whatever the kids wanted to do. Since had missed so much time with them, for him it was all about being with us as a family. He said he could relax at home when I asked him about slowing down.

I think it totally depends on your DH... I know I have heard some spouses who returend from deplyment did not like fireworks, this did not effect my DH.

We stayed at SOG and it was great - I really recommend it.

Have a fantastic trip!

We have done a post-deployment trip, a predeployment trip, and are getting ready for our R&R trip. I think my husband enjoys these things the most: being with us, beers at Epcot, the coffe at Kona, cuddling in the back seat at the Sci-Fi, and eating some non-DFAC food.

Unlike other posters, my husband loves doing the ADRs. This will our 2nd DxDP trip beacuse he wanted it. He makes a PowerPoint slide with all the info for each day...

I hope you guys have a great trip! And congrats on holding down the homefront for over a year!

You will love Shades of Green! We had our first stay there last year. The rooms were very roomy, the beds comfy and in general a very relaxed and beautiful resort.
Both pools are nice but the Mickey Pool feels like disney and is a great way to slow down midday and cool off.

I've had a few friends bothered by crowds and fire works when just getting back. Just be aware of the schedule each night so the first few cracks of sounds don't take anyone by surprise. You can actually watch the fireworks from the hottub by the square pool. And even better view is to walk down the POlynesian beach and and have a drink on the beach while watching fireworks and Electric light parade.

Kona Cafe at the Poly had great breakfast and dinner a short walk away.

Enjoy your time together!

He just acted like a kid and wanted to do whatever the kids wanted to do.

I agree with that. It's all about doing things with the kids! I've been away a few times and that's what I always wanted to do when I came back.

ETA - We've stayed at Shades lots of times and it is great

Thanks so much to everyone who replied! I think we will go down to the beach at the Poly. That sounds great. I have worried about the crowds and the fireworks, because one of the things that has bothered him is not being able to sleep because of the "firework" type noises where he is currently deployed. I guess we'll have to take that one in stride and see how he feels.
