I let my dog out in our yard a little while ago. I was waiting on our screened lanai for him to do his thing and come in. Suddenly, I saw something next to the fence. About that same time, Griffin saw it. I started yelling for him and ran out to grab him. At first, I thought it was a cat. Griffin was standing over it and it was hunched down. When I got close, I realized it was a possum. I grabbed Griffin's collar and pulled him away. The possum ran over under some bushes.

It didn't bite Griffin, but I wasn't sure if he had touched it or not. I decided to give Griffin a bath just to make sure. Griffin thought the possum was interesting. I thought it was creepy. Possums look like very large rats!

They are ugly critters, but generally they are very, very shy and try hard to steer clear of confrontation. My cat thinks they are fascinating and has more than once come nose to nose with one out of curiosity.

You're from Kansas City so I can ask you this question and I think you'll get the 'back story'. Did the possum run or did the possum trot?;)

And they're destructive too.

I live out in the country so thank goodness I can shoot 'em.

Those dang varmints carry disease 'n they're useless except as vulture feed.

I'm glad the possum didn't bite your dog. :thumbsup2

Let me tell you about our possum problem.

We have a pet door for the cats. We were on vacation and our neighbor who takes care of our cats noticed that the cat food container was tipped over and devoured. She mentioned that it may be the possums, but I didn't see any way it would come in the house. So I put away the cat food and kept my eye our for it.

Then I bought a bunch of Godiva chocolate on sale at Sams. I separated out the flavors and left the ones we didn't care for in a bag on the table.

I come out the next AM to a ton of foil (empty of course) all over the table and chocolate claw marks going up the wall to the little table that the cats jump on.

I think maybe the chocolate did the little critter in-never came back! But they do still come on the porch.

City folks.

;)

I think that they are cute! Their faces are so precious!

You have clearly not been face to face with one in the dark LOL They have a wierd noise they make and also they have ugly teeth . They will bite you and they do carry all kinda of cooties .
We have treated so many dogs for bites from those darn things and they can carry rabies .

I almost ran over one the other night. It just waddled out into the street and didn't care that I was driving there. A cat will usually dart out or stay back, but not this stupid creature. It just took its time crossing. I didn't want to hit it because I couldn't think of anything grosser than having dead animal guts on my tires. So I stopped. After it passed, I got the heebee jeebees and wanted to hurl. They are so yucky.

See my post "Dog Help" My dogs just killed one......and the smell.......Where is the gagging smiley.

There was one that lived nearby somewhere last summer until the neighbours moved in with a pit bull and pit/rot mix. Hmmm haven't seen that possum since. :confused3 :rotfl:

They are freaky though. Like giant rats but creppier.

I think JimFitz should weigh in here. ;)

We get possums in our garage all the time - those and raccoons. Our cats (except for one, I'll call "dummy" for now) know to stay away from them. My daughter and I enjoy watching them, but we also know better than to get close to them... and we live in the City.

Uncle Remus :lmao:

I don't like possums, either. My normally sweet black lab killed a possum in about four seconds flat. One night, I was just about to fall asleep when my lab, Holly, started going ballistic at the sliding glass door. I got up, turned on the porch light, and there sat a dumb 'ol possum, just staring at me. Before I could say anything, my husband came in the room and opened the sliding glass door -- Holly bolted out, grabbed the possum before he could react and shook it to death! :( It was like watching Wild Kingdom, only with a dog instead of a leopard!

Yes, they are.
We had one hanging onto our front door jam playing "dead". He was so ugly and creepy. Like a giant rat, but uglier. Blech. If I never see one again, that would be fine by me.

Hey, are you stalking me??

Kidding. I just saw you on the JB thread!

We had one living in our garage. The stupid thing would run and jump in a bag of peat moss when we would let our labs out. We never saw it..... but our chocolate would just stare at the bag. Finally we started finding "presents" the stupid thing left and decided there really was something out there!

It was "disposed of". ;)

Oh my! I found one dead in the back yard this afternoon also! Nasty and icky, thank goodness DD was still in school. It was huge and DH is gone for another couple of weeks, so I got to deal with it myself. Yuck!

I saw one when I was younger, creepy thing. Even creepier...

My sister had a new Wegmans opening near her and we decided at 1:00am to go and see if anyone was camping out, which there weren't! Anyway we were driving through the parking lot and she saw what she thought was a cat, it was a white skunk! I didn't have my camera with me, I had taken it out of my jacket pocket as we left her house, or I would have taken a picture of it.
