Possible: last chance to ride Astro Orbitor

Noting that the previous report was unofficial, so is this latest update:
Al Lutz writes that Astro Orbitor is sticking around, and will eventually be returned to its "proper place" atop the People Mover station.

Yeah, here's hoping this is true.

"Still, it's the last bit of the 1998 New Tomorrowland that has yet to be redone, so it's needed regardless of what is to become of Star Tours. And yes, once DCA proves itself and Tony Baxter gets the green-light for his big budget retheme of Tomorrowland, the Astro Orbiter will return to its rightful place atop the PeopleMover station. But the paint job and mechanical refurbishment is still needed in the meantime. "

As a first time visitor to DL in February but long-time WDW visitor, the location of the Astro Orbitor is probably my biggest and only major problem wiht the place. Its an eyesore so close to the castle and seems to violate the whole prinicpal of having a big attraction draw you into a land. It should be back on top of the PeopleMover station so you can see it in the distance from the hub but it doesn't dominate it. The only reason I like the ride in FL is the height, although that darn elevator sure slows things down!

I love the one at WDW - except for the lines, the elevator takes forever. I like the view of the park. I'm trying the one at DL in 2 weeks! Not sure I'm going to like the ground location - seems just like Dumbo then :confused3

I like the old ones at DL, and I like the ones at WDW..here is a pic I have from last year on them in WDW! I'm the one in the grey at the bottom and one of my best friends in the green, and my other friend taking the pic! :lmao: I like the movement in the picture!

i hope we get something like the old ones back. It took me forever to figure out what was wrong with them after returning to DLR after a 10+ year hiatus. I just kept thinking they had been taller and was afraid it was perspective. LOL

That said, my girls love Dumbo so if the line is short next trip we'll try this one.

I thought the whole reason they took it down in the first place was because the People Mover Station couldn
t support it??? :confused3

I rode the original once just because I try to ride everything at DL, but I didn't really like getting into it and I don't like going up and down so it wasn't much fun for me. Of course, I don't like heights, so I won't go ride it if they move it back to its old place either. I DO remember when I went on the rockets at their original location, that it was a pain to get to them because of the elevator that you had to take to get there...it meant there was a line just to get up to reach them.

If they move them, do you think they'll continue to use the elevator system, or change it to stairs (at least as an option)?

when I was there no one would ride this one with me. Now that everyone's saying it's not the best I don't feel so bad! It didn't look very exciting though, I must admit...

Until it happens it is just a rumor. They need to be put back where they came from. I loved that thrill as a child being up so high...it was amazing. I want the people mover too!!! I ride the TTA at WDW over and over :)

That is correct, the new modifications would have made it too heavy for the station. Don't forget the earthquakes also, lots of rules and regulations that the parks have to abide by. The elevator made it very slow loading and was an added problem to deal with like maintaining an elevator and them elevator permits that have to be regularly taken care of. It was a fun ride at the top but would you rather they pay for maintaining elevators or use the money on other fun stuff? Also do not forget adhering to the ADA which the current version does adhere to the ADA.

I'm with you guys. Chuck the Astro Orbiter & bring back the People Mover (so I can erase the memory of waiting almost 2 hours for Rocket Rods, DL's biggest letdown yet!). :thumbsup2
