My DS jammed his pinkie toe today and he is in a lot of pain. He is not a whiner/complainer usually so I know it's really hurting him. It hurts for him to even take a step.

Other than motrin, which I gave him just now, any other advice? They don't do anything for broken toes do they?

Thanks!

Just about 6 months ago my friend broke that same toe. The doctors couldn't do anything for it.

My cousin broke is toe. They gave him a walking boot I think it depends where you break it and which bone you broke. When I was sevenish I dislocated and then relocated my toe. There wasn't anything they could do so I just wore open sandals for a week or two.

If the toe is swollen apply ice. You usually can do nothing for a broken toe but splint it to the toe next to it. but... I fell down a flight of stairs many years ago. My foot hurt, but I didn't go to the doctors. Months later I did have it checked because the pain wouldn't go away and ended up having foot surgery because the bone did break, but healed incorrectly. If it were my child and it didn't get better within a few days, I would have it checked.

I have broken my pinkie toe more times than I can count and it seems like it is always my left one!!!--I went the first few times and they just taped them together and sent me home after that I just didn't bother going!!The pain will calm down probably by the time he wakes up tomorrow morning but being a kid when it does bruise you may here more complaining about pain but it's not anything to worry about to much----The last time I broke mine was this past winter I had washed a rug and it was still really wet so I figured I'd hang it outside so a bunch of water would drain out of it---Well by the time I got that thing hung in January with no shoes or socks on my feet were pretty cold so I hurried back in and just as I cleared the doorjamb my toe slammed into the table leg--I yelled, jumped up and down, swore a couple of times---After the throbbing had started to calm down I checked and it was just red and sore not broke----SOOO about an hour or so later I go back out to turn the rug so the water pooled at the bottom can drain I hurry back into the house and BAM I catch my toe on the table again!!--Same routine as before yelling,swearing...After a while the throbbing calmed down but I could barely touch it!--When I woke in the AM it wasn't very sore but the bruise I had went about half way up my foot.
Just tell him go easy putting on his socks and his shoes may hurt for a couple of days but he should be OK

I don't go to the Doctor for a broken toe - I've had lots of them. However, for a child - unless there's an insurance or money issue - I'd wait for regular office hours and take him in.

Ice and Advil or Motrin. And you can tape it to the next toe to splint it. They won't do much more than that at the ER.

You can try taping it with adhesive tape to the adjacent toe. That is what is often recommended and is supposed to relieve the pain. It never worked for me but it might make your DS feel better.

I hope he feels better soon. I've done the same thing at least 3 times because DH insists on using bricks  as doorstops in our house. :sad2:

Thanks everyone! DS is doing much better today. He spent most of the day playing outside rollerblading and skateboarding, so I really don't think it's broken. As soon as the motrin kicked in last night he said it felt much better. :thumbsup2

Please, if you tape the toe to the toe next to it, put some cotton between the toes, or the skin could break down between the toes from wetness. The harder the sole to walk on, the better to keep the toe from wiggling. I was given a wooden walking shoe when I had one and it helped a lot.
