Possibility of availability first week of January?

If my family were to take a trip the first week of January next year, we own at SSR. There is the 6th that is currently unavailable for studios. What are the chances of those rooms ever opening up? I know that it is marathon weekend, so not sure if people cancel or not. What has been your experience?

Things change all the time so I do think that a waitlist has a good chance. The new resort studios for VGF open for general booking tomorrow so you may see some movement from other resorts for people who want to get there once the 7 month window opens up for those dates.

Not to hijack thread but do we have any idea what time the rooms will go live? Is it soon as calendar turns over, the normal 8am booking window, or some other random time?

We don't really know. My best guess is the usual time (8am Eastern), but it wouldn't hurt to try a few minutes before then to see. Just do that early enough so that you can be ready at 8 am if you are unsuccessful. Good luck!

It’s Disney/DVC IT, I’m going with booking opening at some random time followed in short order by Stitch eating the page, Olaf losing his head, & then the 7dwarves working on it .

I pieced together January 1-9 this year.
I first had SSR, then OKW. I then pieced together ALK standard.
I ended up with BRVs and moving from ALK because I thought in the future that resort would be harder to get.
I could have pieced together BWVs PG view but got too nervous, but I could have done it day(s) by day.

As others said, it's all a guessing game but I would feel confident I could piece together a 7-10 days at a resort beginning January 1.
But I stalk a lot when I need something.

Is the DVC rental tool somewhat similar to real time availability using points? I’m still waiting on ROFR for OKW. I prefer to stay at OKW or SSR in a one bedroom and they look available as rentals.

It is updated a few times a day so sometimes it can be close but honestly, things change so much that until you can book, nothing is very accurate.

Plus the online system does not tell you how many rooms are there...just that there is at least one…

IMO getting a full week with Marathon January 4-8 is going to be pretty darn difficult, points or cash, even if you're willing to do a split stay.
