Headed to Portsmouth NH and Southern Maine (Kennebunkport area and south) this summer. Any suggestions for dining ideas? Not looking for 5 star fine dining but not looking for chain restaurants either.

DIS members always give us good ideas.

Thanks!!

I would recommend Warren's Loster House in Kittery Maine- http://www.lobsterhouse.com/. It is a nice family restaurant. They have great seafood and an amazing salad bar that comes with your meal. They have a great kid's menu! The picture on their website doesn't really do their salad bar justice so don't go by that. They can have long waits on the weekends (like after church on Sunday's) and at peak meal times and their parking lot can get congested so just be aware of that.

There are a few restaurants in Kittery that we really love.

1. Robert's Maine Grille - owned by the same family who owns Bob's Clam Hut (located right down the street), but this is a sit down setting. Delicious seafood. They have a nice deck that overlooks the river.

2. When Pig's Fly - Yummy pizza and interesting app menu.

3. Loco Coco Taco - Good mexican.

We love Barnacle Billy's in Ogunquit ME as well. Rum Punch is the best!

Are you just looking for places to eat, or things to do? There is a ton to do in Portsmouth and So. ME. If you would like some suggestions I would be happy to give you some. I live in Cape Elizabeth and we travel down south frequently. In Portsmouth they have a cute little bakery. Sells yummy coffee and treats, called Popovers on the square. There is also a pizza place, it is a chain, but it is good pizza. Fun atmosphere and they have organic ingredients. Called Flatbreads. There is a sushi place there I have been dying to try. I have heard good things about it, but never actually ate there. Kennebunkport has several REALLY good restaurants. Some are very expensive though. The White Barn Inn constantly gets written up. It is amazing, but very fancy and expensive. A nice midpoint one would be On the Marsh. Or Yachtsman. All have their menus online. If you make it as far north as Portland, there is a great Sushi place called BenKay. Also several smaller places to grab a bite to eat. We love Fore St grill and Ri Ra Irish pub. Anyway, good luck on your trip! Hope you have a great time!

We go to the area every several years, but haven't been for a while. Always looking for suggestions of things to do as well as dine. In the past, we've taken the river cruise out of Portsmouth as well as Kennebunkport. Some of the places we've eaten at and enjoyed are:

Portmouth Brewery and Friendly Toast.
Chauncey's and Barnacle Bills - Ogunquit for lobster.
Federal Jacks and Allisons in Kennebunkport

Open for other suggestions. How is the Maine diner? I've read a bit about it but have never gone. Is it worth the line?

I know you said you aren't interested in chain restaurants, but there's a Maine chain, Weathervane, that has yummy seafood (and chicken and steak). They have a restaurant in Kittery by the Kittery Trading Post. It's casual dining, pretty reasonably priced. The onion rings are amazing! (don't go to the Dover, NH location, though. That one isn't very good.)

Barnacle Billy's and The Lobster Pound were our two favorite meals. Both are in Ogunquit, Maine. :)

We go to Wells, ME often. The Maine Diner is well known and has been given many accolades. We have really liked it. We also really like Congdon's Doughnuts for breakfast and, of course, doughnuts.

Make sure you check out restaurant.com as they have the certificates for 2.00...Here are some of my favorites.

Clay Hill Farm
Jonathans
When Pigs Fly
Wells Diner (love everything here)
Barnacle Billys

Thank you so much for the restaurant.com idea. I didn't even think about it for vacation! :)

I love all of the other choices from everyone. Can't wait to go online and check out the menus.

2 suggestions in portsmouth.
Jumpin Jays Fish Cafe, great seafood place right in the center
The Library.. OMG! This place is my new favorite restaurant, it is pricey, but worth it. this is on street behind center.

Check out the websites!

I'm from Wells I highly recommend The Steak House. Just get there when they first open so you don't have to wait long for a table.

Have to agree with Maine Diner (cornbread muffins :thumbsup2) and Congdons Donuts (maple glazed cinnamon buns - beware they are addicting). Also Mike's Clam Shack and the Fishermans Catch are very good. These are all in Wells.

Portsmouth--The Friendly Toast (breakfast and lunch). Agave Dos (Mexican) and my brother is the chef at The District(dinner).

Kittery- warrens Lobster House. Hands down. Best salad bar ever :)

Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery has great food and was on Diner's Drive ins and Dives.

I like the Goldenrod in York for lunch and ice cream. Yeah, it's a bit of a tourist trap but I still have to visit when I am in the area.

I also love Warren's in Kittery and The Steakhouse in Wells.

We like Ogunquit Lobster Pound
Steakhouse
Lord's

Lords and the Steakhouse are in Wells and owned by the same family.

Another alternative to the Weathervane in Kittery is Newick's in Dover Point. Similar food (most go for the fried fresh seafood), and we like both, but find that Newick's has the edge.

Bob's clam hut in Kittery!!!!!!

If you're going a bit inland, go to Wild Willy's Burgers in Rochester NH. Wicked good burgers.
