Can someone run me through the standard procedure for taking portable dvd players though security? Do you have to take them out of the case? Turn them on? Play a video? Also, is it safe to put them though the scanners or will it affect them or the dvd's? Sorry if these are silly questions. :earseek:

Unless something has changed since Jan 2005. I had mine in a tote bag along with my makeup bag a book and a few snacks. I ran the entire bag through the scanner and nothing was said about it. The dvd's were fine.

I don't think they are silly questions. I was wondering myself because we got my DS one of these for Christmas and I was going to ask about taking them to the airport for our Disney trip too. Now we both know. :)

I never had a problem. One time I was asked if it was a lap top and I said no.

Shouldnt need to take it out at all.

I take my DVD Player on all my trips. I have had it through about 100 security checkpoints and never had to take it out of the tote nor were there any problems

We were told by the screeners that the battery may look odd on the XRay machine so you might have to pull it out. However we have never been asked to do this so the chances may be slim.

Worst case is that they ask you to turn it on. If they hear music, they're going to be happy.

DH did have to open our DVD bag for security at BWI in August last year. I think they wanted to see the battery because of how something looked on the X-Ray. But there were no problems. Didn't have to turn it on or anything, they just wanted to make sure it was a battery in there, and not something else. As soon as they saw it, they said OK and let us go.

Of course, that was at the same time when they were still requiring everyone to take their shoes off, even though TSA was saying it was no longer required. So BWI might be out of the norm with everyone else...

I've found BWI to be OK.
IMHO, ALL THE IDIOTS WORK AT FLL!!!!!!!!!
In and out of OVER 20 airports every year, FLL screeners are the WORST!
Each time it's a different procedure and lie about why it's necessary THIS TIME. :confused3
I use PBI when I have to travel to south FL.

It isn't the security screener's job to explain the procedures. If you have a question about it, discuss it with a TSA manager, off-line, away from the security screening area.

The last thing you want to do is cause a fuss with a TSA agent. They can make your life miserable if they want to. Some know they have this power and will try to make you miserable but I just smile and let them do whatever they have to.

Gee, thanks for the advice. I don't remember stating that I questioned the TSA wannabe cop. Let me re-read my post.
Nope, didn't say that.
Actually, I did discuss the lack of consistent procedures with a TSA supervisor (over at their podium as to not hold up others), the airport manager, and a local chamber of commerce representative. I even emailed the TSA and sent in a comment card, which I know was a waste of time, but it made me feel better!
But like they say, "Your comments are appreciated!" :rotfl:

Actually, I enjoy it! They don't affect my life, just my airport experience. Imagine all the changes that would have never occurred if everyone just smiled and conformed!
Yeah, I know I'm nuts . . . but someone has to be! :rotfl:

My comments were general in nature. There's no need to get self-conscious (nor be disparaging to folks who work for the TSA).

Which is actually what I suggested. :confused3
