Has anyone found any portable DVD players with screen for $150 or less? I see that Circuit City has one for $179. I would like it to be able to plug into the outlet in dh's car. (my van has a factory installed DVD player) Thanks.

I am looking for one too, but I want the 7 or 8 inch screen. I am waiting until the day after thanksgiving to hit the stores to see if I can get it better than $228. I did see it on sale once at Target for $199, but I still waited to get it.

I purchased a Memorex 5" screen portable DVD player at Target for 179.99 for my granddaughter for car trips and our flights down to WDW. It's just perfect for her. It comes with a rechargable battery and a car adapter. And it's really a nice size. The picture is very clear and sound is exceptional. The 7" screens looked just a little too big for what I wanted it for. I slip it into a small case and we're gone! They have them on sale in our Sunday paper every week. Hope you find the one you like!

Oh I forgot...it didn't come with headphones, but that was ok because I got to pick out the ones that fit her little 3 year old ears.

hjad one for I think 130 ish or something like that...

OfficeMax had them available via their website for $143... it appears to be backordered at the moment. (I ordered mine yesterday!)

We bought a Panasonic or Poloroid I forget which one at Best Buy a couple of weeks ago. It was $199 with a $50 rebate. Came with headphones, a duel headphone adaptor, 2 hour battery and an adaptor to plug into the car lighter. It plays really nice.

Don't forget, these portable DVD players are wonderful for helping pass the time on airplanes! We purchased a 3-way headphone splitter at Radio Shack and all 3 kids will watch a movie on their way to Disney!

:earseek: Here is something you might want to consider when buying a portable DVD player! :earseek: Buy one which plays serveral formats other than DVD. I bought one from Target that plays MP3, CD, SVCD, VCD. :wave2: I payed more for it, but the SVCD feature saves me from carrying expensive DVD's everywhere I go.

:moped: SVCD is also called MPEG-2. Many digital home movies are now in this format, and it is also possible to make a copy of your DVD's in this format, and burn them on common cd's. If lost, or scratched you are out $0.50 instead of $20.00.
MP3 is a compression format for music. Depending on the bitrate you can fit 100 songs or more on a cd.
I hope this helps you. This probably isn't the correct forum for this info, but I wanted to answer you question :moped:

My DH has a DVD writer and he converts the MPEG-2 to regular DVD formats. We can play them on any DVD player. If needed someone could find some conversion software to make the DVD playable.

Awesome deal for portable DVD player at www.slickdeals.net
I go to this site daily and have got some great deals. If you click on the link it will take you to the information on the deal. At the top of the info box is a link for comments. You can click on this to get people comments about the product.

Wow - thanks for all of the great info! I am going to check the ads tomorrow and hopefully make a decision soon. The one from HSN sounds like a great deal. For a little bit more than what I wanted to spend for a 5 inch, I can buy one with a larger screen.
I have heard complaints about how "hot" some of these players can get. Also, another thing to consider is whether the player is widescreen or not. (makes it look larger??) Keep the advice coming. I sure appreciate it.

I'm very interested in this thread - I have been wanting to buy a portable DVd player for myself for a while now, but they are still coming in at around the £200 ($320/330) mark at best here in the UK. However. we're in Orlando just after Christmas, so I might be getting myself a little gift if I can get one at these prices !

Does anyone know if any of these cheaper players mentioned are either regional coding free or are hackable ? We use region 2 discs (Europe) here in the UK - I have lots of discs from all over the world as my 2 home players are both region hacked, but most of my discs are still region 2.

STaylor, I'm gonna have a look at that site you gave the link to, thanks.

Marymrg,

You mentioned something about HSN - I cant find any refernece to that on the other posts here - I guess I must just be missing it, can you enlighten me ??

And if any can pass on the names/locations of some good, cheap electronics stores in Orlando that would be great too !

Thanks.

Thanks 1Sickpupe.

Can anyone suggest any good shops to try for a portable DVD player when we are in Orlando ?

We arrive on Boxing Day, so with luck I might get a sale bargain. Am I best sticking to the big retailers like Circuit City, or does anyone know of specialist audio-visual retailers I could try that might be better ?

Thanks.

OK - I bit the bullet and ordered the Mustek Portable DVD Player with 7" Wide Screen Color LCD. I used the 25% off coupon mentioned earlier and with shipping/handling the total was

$214.39

After $30 rebate, my final cost will be:$184.39

One word of caution when shopping online at HSN. I used the first time buyer coupon but removed the item and tried to put it back in the shopping cart and it wouldn't take the coupon. Before you apply the coupon, make sure that is what you want as it won't let you reapply it. (even if you haven't placed an order or if it's for the same thing) Also, that coupon can not be used with the flex pay option. (that's what messed me up)

I called customer service and when they applied the coupon, it came up for only $50 (not the higher amount) In the end, I cancelled my order but had my husband order it instead on-line and all was fine.

I need it in 11 days so everyone keep their fingers crossed that it arrives in time! (supposed to be here in 7-10)

Thanks again for all of the advice.

On our first trip to Florida with the DD's- they were 15 mo and 2 1/2...we purchased a 13" tv/vcr combo with the ac/dc adapter while there...at sears....we still have this tv/vcr combo and have used it MANY times since this first trip...dd's are now 6 and 7. Recently we had a "duuuuhhh why didn't we think of this earlier" moment. Both DH and I have laptops. Both laptops have ac/dc plugs...both also have earphone jacks......and they have DVD players!!!

Now both girls watch their OWN movie...no more fighting about whose watching what...they set the laptop in their laps, tilt the screen away so it's not quite as close (both are not HUGE screens to begin with)....

This has been a godsend! For those of you with laptops- try it... On one recent road trip, we took brought only one laptop, put it on the console of our pickup (crew cab..big cab!)...and the girls watched Stich! at the same time...only- we had to listen!

The worst part though is that 95% of our movies are VHS! time to start investing in DVDs !!
