Hello everyone. We are getting ready for our upcoming trip and will be driving from New Jersey. I keep hearing how great those portable dvd players are. So, does anyone have any recommendations for which one to get, seems like there are so many out there! I have a toyota camry, so I am assuming it hooks to the back of the headrest? I have 2 kids, so does that mean only one would be able to watch it at time? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

We use ours on long trips all the time!!! They are WONDERFUL!! Most portable DVD players have two headphone jacks. Don't buy one that doesn't. You can buy the headrest attachment things at Wal mart, although we don't use one. It makes it so that only one child can see the screen properly. So unless you can get a "middle of the car roof" mount, which can be really expensive the headrest thing might cause more fights than it's worth! We just use a square plastic bucket thingie down in the middle of the footwell between the kids. My husband has a piece of flexible rubbery stuff that he puts on top of the bucket so that when the DVD player is on it, it isn't sliding all over the place. You can also get velcro for that purpose. If you can, try and get a dvd player with a long battery life. Most only last about 2.5 hours and that won't get you very far! (if you are on a plane that is...most come with lighter/charger thing for cars so the battery doesn't die!)

We have a Sony. It's has a four hour battery life. It was on the pricier side, but it's been well worth it. I will say that before the Sony we had a random brand and it lasted for a long long time and worked just fine. As long as you two headphone jacks you'll be good to go!

Remember to get a full charge on the battery before the long trip!!

good luck, have fun!!!

We bought ours at Walmart. There are 2 screens and they do hook to the headrests. Ours can also have a gave system hooked to it and it did come with a plug n' play handle that has some games. The good thing about this system is one child can be watching a movie and the other can be playing games - at the same time.

We also have 2 Video Now Jr. units for our kids that we picked up at the consignment shop and we have bought about 15 cartoons (SpongeBob, Fairly Odd Parents, Rugrats, Dora, etc.) and if they don't like what's playing on the screens they can turn those on instead. We use these for short car trips now instead of using the DVD player.

My older DD has one, and I use it at times for our little one. We have a carlighter attachment so that we can recharge if needed in the car. That has been a saver right there. We may be buying a new one though too. Older DD is going on a trip with her dad to FL. next Sunday. We are going a trip with little DD to FL NEXT SUNDAY! LOL! Not the same flight either. So older DD said little DD could use hers, but I could tell she would rather take it herself. So I may get another one, so little DD has her own.

We bought the same one at Walmart!! (on sale--woohoo)--It works great & isn't expensive. If I were to recommend one thing it would be to buy good headphones. (around $20-$25 ea.) You can still listen to the radio or have a conversation & the kids can't hear you or the radio. We had the "cheaper" ones and my kids were distracted by the radio.

We have a Polaroid one from Target. It was pretty cheap and it works great! It came with a cord to use in the car, too, so you don't have to worry about the battery dying on a really long trip. I got a bag for it that loops around the front seats so the DVD player hangs between the front seats. It works well and is super easy to take in and out of the van. I only have 1 kid, so we don't have to worry about picking movies, etc! I also put tv shows for him on my video iPod and sometimes he uses that instead of the dvd player.

We got 'Dynex' at Best Buy, 7" screens. They came w/ all the cords, etc for the car lighter, tv hookup, etc. I think we did have to buy headphones though (i thought it was very weird they weren't included, but whatever). The dvd players were about $69 each (we got one for each child). They don't hang from the back of the headrests though. they just sit on the kids laps, which isn't a problem at all. I've also found them very useful in the house... if my dd has a sleepover, she and friend takes one of the players into bed w/ them to fall asleep to. the kids also take them into a 'fort' they make to watch a movie together. so we use them in the house a bit too, and when the kids playroom dvd player that's hooked up to the tv goes, I won't have to buy a new one. I like them not hanging from the headrests actually, easier to take inside on trips, etc.

We have the same one, works great and not very expensive !!

I was looking through the target add earlier and they have a single screeen flip up one on sale for $39 i believe and a two screen one on sale for $99 not to bad not sure of the brands or reviews. we have a single screen one and bought a philips carry case from walmart for 19.99 that will hook between the two front seats so the kids in the back can all see it... but this year we are taking a van (usally we drive an intrepid w/ the kids 3 across the back) the van will give up so much more room... but the backrow might have trouble seeing the screen in the front so we are borrowing FILs so the backrow and middle row will have thier own.
