We have a DVD player in our Tahoe so the kids are used to TV in the car. We just got back from a trip to Washington DC and borrowed my brother's DVD player for the flight.... only to discover that the battery didn't hold a charge! Had to entertain the kids for 5 hours, and that was NOT fun, so my advice is to definitely buy it! We bought a cheap leatherette case at Walmart and it was great for holding it and all the straps and accessories. We wound up searching out an electronics store and buying a new one while we were in DC (figured we'd use it on future vacations anyway), so we had a battery operated player for our flight home! Things to look for: A/V cables to connect it to your hotel room TV, remote control if you're going to use it in your room, car cigarette lighter adapter, and more than one headphone jack if you have more than one kid.
