So, I'm planning to book a room in Port Orleans Riverside for next January any day now. Is there anything I should recommend? Also, is there anything I should be aware of before making this decision?

How many people are in your party?

I would suggest a room in either building 14 or 15, because it is near everything--food court, pool, south depot.

I do not suggest booking a water view room--save the $$ because that view may either be of the water or of a pool and the view might be blocked! Also, you won't have a private balcony, so there's really (IMO) no point in a great view.

Enjoy your stay! I love it there!

I agree about the view. When we stayed there in Sept., we had a waterview room. It was a waste of money for us. I am getting a standard view when we go this Dec.

The best way to enjoy the views is to walk around the grounds. ;)

We loved the alligator bayou side of the resort. The mansions were pretty, but we loved the relaxing atmosphere of alligator bayou. We are going to stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in March and I am excited to try something new but feeling a little sad not the be going to back to POR. It is is wonderful resort!!

Some people on here are "resort" people and some just need a place to sleep when not in the parks. If you are like us, resort people, then you will love POR, take time to stroll around the grounds, walk the path to POFQ, take the boat to DTD. In our opinion, POR is a deluxe moderate, you get great rooms and theming along with beautiful grounds at a moderate price. This is just an opinion as we are biased, we love this resort.

We stayed at POR on our last trip. We stayed in the mansions, preferring the room decor in those. We had a standard view and ended up looking out on the fountain in the courtyard outside our building. We needed two rooms, so we requested connecting ones. We also prefer to have a room on the end. We got everything we requested. Our week there was wonderful. Hope you have a great time!

Wherever you stay you will love POR.

I stayed in POR Sep 08, in Magnolia Terrace (bldg 85), ground floor, facing Oak Manor (bldg 90). I had only requested a ground floor room.

Here's some of my observations:
--There was a merchandise shop that sold BEER!, bottled water, milk in plastic bottles, Beer, bread, bagels, cereal, etc-- you could buy carton milk and fruit in the cafetaria. There was a mini fridge in the room that came in use! I did bring an electric kettle & teabags & travel mug with me.
--If I were on the higher floor, I could have pulled a chair outside in the evening to sit out by the railing (with a drink...). It's not the same as my own balcony, but it still would have been nice....
-- Of the Manor Bldgs, this one was the closest to a bus stop, and also the closest to Ol Man Island.
--Even tho there were lots of people of that pool, there were lots of areas of loungers, that I didn't feel it was "crowded". I never used the other pools, this was fine for me!
--Mostly I just used the room as a place to sleep and shower, I did laze around the resort a few mornings, and it was very pleasant.
--The boat to DTD was a nice perk (I hear you can see the Treehouse Villas as the boat passes that area...)
--There's more space between buildings at POR than at POFQ.
--I got off the bus at PO French Quarter 1 evening, bought some freshly made beignets there, and walked up the path back to POR ~15 min walk... that could be a nice end to an evening!

(truth be known, the POFQ event was early in my trip: Coming home got off at POFQ to get fresh made beignets that I heard about. Because my feet were painfully blistered (I had unfortunately landed in Florida that way), I was going to get on the boat for a short or long trip back to POR but went the wrong way and walked the whole way...it was so painful, I had to walk barefoot... I was barely holding back the tears! (the poor me's!) When I got to the room, I just got in bed with a pillow under my calves, and a cup of tea and the whole container of beignets...They were really good!)

This Sept I'm booked for split with POP and YC, but would surely stay at POR again.

Just a note, if you are that physically miserable you could call the front desk and request the golfcart pick you up.
The one thing that can be a bummer is if you are upstairs in one of the buildings with no elevator and you have small ones with a double stroller to drag up or have a senior adult traveling who tuckers out.
It is a giant PITB.

:confused3 I was so distracted with each step of pain I couldn't even think of that! But I'm stubborn too! .... I just kept telling myself "it's such a nice walk.. it's such a nice walk..step :tiptoe: step step...they're only blisters... step :tiptoe: step.. it's such a nice night.."
