Love Riverside. Whats not to like it is beautiful. We are a family of 5 and we have stayed there 3 times and have always enjoyed this resort. This year wanted to surprise my kids (and my big kid wife) and stay in the princess room. To me this would have been priceless for my girls. The princess room is the same room we have stayed in the last 3 visits but decorated very nicely with the new princess theme. I went to book the room and it was a no go. They now only allow 4 in the room. I'm pretty annoyed with this. It would of truly added some magic to our trip.
My one and only problem with Disney is they cater to families of 4 and under.

You guys don't come on here to read anything negative but for larger families thought I would share this with you.

POR has 2 sections - Mansions and Alligator Bayou. The Princess rooms are in the mansions section. That section always only allowed 4, there's been no change. Alligator Bayou allows 5 with the small fold down bed.

This is correct.

We are also a family of 5, so we will be staying in the Alligator Bayou section. The Royal Rooms looked wonderful, so we booked one for my MIL for two nights in the middle of our trip (she lives in FL and will just meet up with us for the weekend).

My kids are so excited to stay in the room with her, but it does stink that we can't stay there the whole trip without doubling our cost. However, this is the same as the other moderate resorts that only allow 4. We either have to get two rooms or stay somewhere else. Sometimes DH & I debate about which kid to get rid of to make our Disney planning easier ;)

Didn't they used to allow a roll-away in that section before they upgraded to the queen size beds?

Only if there was a problem and they ran out of room in the other section, such as a room taken out for maintainance.

The only way you could have been allowed to stay in a Mansions room at POR with a family of 5 is if the youngest child was under the age of 3 (and is therefore considered an infant). Once they reach 3 they are counted as a child and thus are a factor in the maximum room occupancy. Since your youngest is now 3 or over you will be limited to an AB room at POR. This is NOT a change.

I don't want to sound rude here, but how can you say they cater to families with 4 or under? POR is not the only resort out there. There are many other resorts that allow for a larger family. And they just built a new resort that is mainly suites at a value price. Sorry, just my feelings on the subject.

Well, I guess its all in how you look at things.

The rooms at POR that sleep 5, in Alligator Bayou section, used to be/sometimes are (who really knows?) reserved for families of 5, and smaller families didn't/don't have equal chance to get them. King rooms are available for 2 occupants only, not a couple with 1 child who could sleep on a rollaway or a pack and play..

If you would really like for your family to stay in one of the princess rooms make your vacation one day shorter and get 2 princess rooms for 1 night, or invite friends/family that have 3 members and share the rooms. :)

I wish it was the other way around where we won't have a chance to stay at AB, instead will put us in the Mansion section. I prefer the Mansion over the AB, but because there are 5 of us, we are stuck in the AB section. I'm sure I will like the resort just the same. :)

OP, have you thought about doing one night in the princess rooms (2 rooms so you could all fit). And the other nights in one AB room or another resort that accomidates five in one room. You could still surprise them that way and only spend the cost of an extra room for the one night.

I agree. We're a party of 2 and I've been afraid to book at POR since I would only want to stay in the regular manor rooms (not AB or princess room). Since room requests are not guarenteed, I've been unwilling to risk it so far. Maybe one day.

Thats a great Idea. I'm thinking I might give this a try.

Thanks KB

My beef with Disney is generally all the resort rooms are pretty small and the majority only handle 4 people........

But thats true of a lot of hotels outside Disney too - occupancy is based on 4 people. There are lots of options in Disney for families more than 4.

Agreed, it is a bummer that families of 5 can't enjoy the Princess rooms unless they book two rooms but such is life.

The bulk of hotel rooms in the entire country, unless it is a suite, are a capacity of 4.

Disney has more options for a family of 5 or more than most places.

You can book preferred and be guaranteed a room in AB.

I agree with the pp's that say most hotels everywhere are only made to accomodate 4 people and that disney probably does do better than most at accomodating larger families....

That being said, I completely understand the disappointment, being a family of 5 myself. I is hard when you spend years falling in love with specific resorts and then when your third child turns 3 you are suddenly limited on choices.

And yes there are other options besides POR, but they are usually quite a bit more expensive. The other options I know of are deluxe resorts or family suites.

We LOVE POFQ but I know it just isn't possilbe now for our family to stay there  Although we were lucky enough to travel with my parents this last trip and got two rooms at POFQ and had my oldest stay in their room :)

Not complaining :goodvibes Just saying I understand!

We're you talking to me or the OP? You quoted my post. If to me, I think you misunderstood my post.
