Port Orleans FQ vs Riverside

We are planning our 3rd family trip since 2010 for summer 2014 and I am already super excited.

In 2012, we stayed at French Quarter in Building 4 (I requested Building 4 ahead of time) and loved it. The location was perfect. Close to the pool, the bus depot, the food court, it was great. HOWEVER, I'm thinking we might like to stay at Riverside this time but hesitate because I don't want to spend an extra $200 or so for a preferred room so I would rather take my chances and request a room in one of these preferred buildings and see what happens.
My question is...what are the chances of getting a room in a preferred building without paying for it? Oh yeah, we would be going in July 2014 so definitely during the busy season.

I hear that the chance of getting a preferred room without paying for it are near zero. However, you can make a request to have a room close to the main building... no guarantees though.

Years ago we stayed at POFQ, and just 4 months ago we were at POR-AB. In September we are returing to POR, but might try the mansions. I don't think you can go wrong at PO.

I fell in love with FQ the moment I got out ME. Its size, the theme, the nature all around it, for me it was perfection. I don't even plan on trying another resort because I know it won't be as good as POFQ.

Summer is a busy time of year for all resorts, and occupancy rates are high. Preferred rooms are a paid room category. So your chance of getting one as a request only are somewhere between slim and none.

Booked at POFQ for our October trip and requested Building 4 after another DISer recommended that. Super excited about FQ! Glad to here all the positive feedback.
