They are not pop up ads, but instant messages!

I can't even begin to tell you how annoying they are. I just can't get rid of them. I changed my privacy to accept no instant messages, yet they still come!

I'm glad my dd can't read yet!

Anyone else with this problem? Were you able to get rid of it?

I used to get a ton of them, I just started blocking everyone that showed up. Now I get none. I don't use a "real" name, that could be why. I also have "show accept message" dialog from users not on buddy list, that way you only get a notifier that someone wants to send you a message. You can then click yes or no, or ignore.

Its probably not an IM. There is another way these jerks could be spamming you and it looks a lot like an IM. If the windows that contain the spam have a tiltle which reads "Messenger Service", its not an IM, but something else that spammers have leared to exploit. The good news is you can fix it.

Windows includes a method for a network administrator to send you a message. It was intended for use on office LANs, but home versions of windows have this turned on to. The spammers caught on to this a little over a year ago and started using it to pop up their spam onto your desktop over the internet, even if you aren't browsing the web at the time. You only have to be connected to the internet (or dialed in if you use a modem) for this to work.

Here is a link to a Microsoft page that describes the problem and how to stop it.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp

Note: Even though the service is called messenger, it has absolutly nothing to do with instant messaging. You can (and should) disable it without effecting your instant messaging service in any way. Anyone who uses XP at home should check this page and make sure you have the admin messaging feature turned off, even if you currently are not getting spam.

You are a peach! I have seen this on my DHs desktop, he just clicks for it to go away. Now I will fix it.

Thanks again, DISers are the best!

That happened to me and it was very upsetting. I couldn't figure out why it was happening and eventually it stopped.

Hurray!

Take "that" you nasty spamers!!!!

Goodbye!!!! You're not welcome anymore!!!!

Thanks so much!!

This put an end to this for me. I think they're called port intrusions and I never had them until I got a cable modem. A friend of mine gave me these instructions a few months ago, and I have not had one since. Yippeee!

And Microsoft is almost apologetic for it, showing people how to turn it off. It will not be in the next MS OS.

It was happening here
And it was starting to bug me:(
Thanks for the link
Hope it works

I took care of the "messenger service" thing already (that was so annoying), but I do get real AOL porn IMs now and then. The good thing is that they pop up with a message asking me to accept it or not, and I never accept one from a name that I don't know.

Oh, I just can't tell you how nice it was to "surf" last night with out even *1* interuption!!

Now, I don't have to worry abt my 4yr dd when she's on Playhouse Disney or Thomas!

Thanks so much again!!!

Dis-ers are the BEST!!! ::yes::

Thanks it has fixed the problem
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
I have been on line for over an hour and no interuptions
