I just read on another thread about someone using DVC points to stay at POR. I didn't know what was possible b/c it's not a DVC resort, right?

Is this a good option to consider instead of just booking a room through Disney? Can you get a mansion room?

Because it's not a DVC resort, and therefore no ones home resort, can it only be booked 7 months out?

I probably have other questions, but will start with those. ;)

It is part of the Disney Collection and the point cost is a bit high, in comparison to the DVC rooms, plus there is a $95.00 fee. And, if you change anything about the reservation, it is another $95.00 fee.

If you have to cancel, the points become "reservation" points, which can no longer be used to book a DVC room.

For example, in the summer a garden view room is 192 points for the week vs. a room at OKW will run you only 106 points.

It is possible to use your points at a Moderate or Deluxe WDW resort which does not have villas attached.

Personally, I never felt that it was a great use of points as you could usually get a studio for the same number (or less) of points and also a $95 booking fee was introduced (I think, in 2008) which made it even less of a good value.

From the way you phrased the question, I'm not sure if you are asking as an owner or a potential renter but I certainly woulnd't advise renting points for use at other non-DVC WDW resorts as it really wouldn't be economical.

Thanks, i was asking as a potential renter, and now that I know a few more of the details it doesn't really seem worth it..

Renting points can be a very good value if you plan to stay at a DVC resort. Not if you want to stay at a non-DVC resort.

Just as a point of comparison, it's roughly twice as many points to stay at POR as it would be to stay in an OKW studio - and at OKW, you get a balcony, queen beds instead of doubles, a kitchenette, and a bigger room. And, there's a $95 fee to stay at a non-DVC resort.
