My family is currently planning a Disney vacation for late August this year, and we've been trying to decide between resorts for a while now, and we've finally gotten it narrowed down to Port Orleans Riverside or Port Orleans French Quarter. Our last Disney trip (August of last year), we stayed at Coronado Springs and thought it was very beautiful, but too spread out for our family (especially my younger sister, who used to fall asleep on the walk home from the bus stop in the nighttime). But anyway, our family consists of My mom, dad, sister (now age 8), and me (age 13).

If anyone could please tell me the pros and cons of each, and which resort you think would be better suited for my family, I would really, really appreciate it. :)

POFQ is the resort for you.

POFQ is very small and compact, whereas POR is larger and spread out. You can use POR's facilities when staying at POFQ. The pontoon boats will take you to DTD, as well. We stayed there in Dec 2002 and enjoyed it. I believe it has be refurbished since then.

Second vote for POFQ. It's the only resort we've stayed at and will be going back next April. I really think you and your family will love it! :goodvibes

Thanks :)

If anyone else has any additional input, it would be greatly appreciated :)

We love POFQ and considered staying at POR next go around. DH compared the 2 resorts on google earth to get a better idea of how spread out they really are and he said we should stick with POFQ because of the compactness. (We're traveling wit DD and his parents) It's really a great resort. Not to mention it's first pickup and drop-off for busses. I understand from other posters that the size of POR and shared busses can be problematic.

You cant go wrong w/ either one of these resorts... They are both beautiful. If you are looking for something smaller stick w/ POFQ... but if you dont mind the resort being larger then go w/ POR...
My personal favorite is POR... I loved everything about it... we stayed in the Mansion style side. Everything about this resort was great... The cm's, the grounds, the rooms, the resturants....
Also remember that these are sister resorts so you can stroll on over to either resort you dont pick and check it out!
Also one of the best things (I think) is the boat to DTD...
Again, either way you cant go wrong!

PS: You have to try the Stuffed French Toast in Boatrights.. (por) ITS SO GOOD!!! oh and try and schedule a carriage ride... it rides around both resorts and is breathtaking!

I always loved POFQ. As long as you don't mind the lack of a sit-down restaurant, it's a great place. It's small, intimate, and the rooms are lovely.

Another vote for POFQ. We just made our first trip to DisneyWorld (we are grandparent-age) and stayed at POFQ. We loved it and would not hesitate to go back.

We stayed at POFQ in '93 and will be at POR in Jan '08. POFQ was fun and has an awesome pool but I wanted to try POR and stay in the mansions.

Suggestion: look at the pictures and see which one you like the looks of best. Then look at the maps and pick the section closer to the bus stops and restaurants. Then make your ressies and request that you are in the area that you picked out. If at all possible, they will put you there.

Either way, you will have a blast!! Enjoy!!

Hey fellow DIS-ers. We are taking our first trip to WDW May 18-23 of '08. I currently have ressies at an off-site hotel. But I'm really thinking about staying onsite. POR is the cheapest resort we can find, as we are a family of 5 ppl. My question is, our children will be 11, 9, and nearly 5 for our trip...I'm wondering if they'll enjoy themselves. The photos I've seen show a really nice resort, but not sure how much fun the kids will have. Any input?

Thanks!!

POFQ is the best resort in WDW, in my opinion, its the smallest, quietest, best themed, has the best food, and is first in dropping off and picking up of the Port Orleans resorts

Thanks for the response - but unfortunately it doesn't help me make up my
mind!!!

Hmmm, well, only you know what will work best for your family. Perhaps it would be better for you to post your own thread so you can express what your concerns/questions are. The OP on this thread wanted to know about recommendations for her specific family, so if you would like to have suggestions for your own family a separate thread would probably help you more.

We stayed at Riverside a few years back and toured the French Quarters while we were there. From what you've said, the French Quarters is the place for you. It is beautiful, relaxing and yes, everything is close by. The boat ride to DTD is wonderful. If you'd like to visit POR, (and I recommend that you do)you have the choice of walking along the river, or take the boat. On its way back from DTD, it first stops at the French Quarters, then off to Riverside. My vote for you is also the French Quarters.
