POR--jogging and fishing questions

We're staying at POR for a quick trip at the end of February and we are interested in going fishing with our DS(3). He is very independent and he might want to put the worms on the hook himself without parental interference. Does anyone know if the hooks are barbed or have any suggestions about they have handled this with their similarly aged children?

Also, my DH likes to go jogging. We are aware that the resort has a jogging trail, but he prefers not to run the same trail repeatedly. I thought that I read somewhere about a walking/jogging path from POR/POFG to OKW--is there one or am I mistaken?

Thanks.

We just got back from POR last night and I saw that the path from POR to POFQ is blocked by a big planter. It will be moved when POFQ reopens next month, but probably not by the time you get there.

I don't know about the hooks, we didn't get a chance to do half the stuff we wanted.

Missing the mouse already, Hillary

We did the fishing with the kdis last summer, and I am trying to remember the poles for you... They are very simple, bamboo canes with a big "J" hook and a cork-type bobber, like you'd imagine Tom Sawyer would use. You get a cup of very wiggly worms. The fish are smart and can get the worm without being caught, so perhaps that means there was no barb? My kids were only 8 and 4 last summer and I sure don't remember anyone getting pricked... What I DO remember is how a lot of worms wiggled away and went into the pond without ever getting on our poles, and how many worms the fish snatched!

We were lucky and both kids caught a few fish, which you throw right back. The CM at the shack told me sometimes the fish won't eat at all; it depends on the mood they are in! You might go by and ask before you try fishing, so your son isn't disappointed if "they're not biting!"

I also recall they give you towels to wip the goo off your hands and that luckily, the outdoor bar that sells Pina Coladas and beer is just a few steps away... :)

Thanks for the information. I think the fishing sounds fun so I'm sure we'll give it a try.

FYI -

Instead of worms, use cheese. On a previous visit, we were given some cheese by another guest (I'm not sure where he got it from - maybe the foodcourt) and caught about a dozen fish. It made the experience much more enjoyable.

Kelmag, that's a great tip... I thought the worms were gross and actually felt pangs of guilt feeding them to the fish, like it was "Gladiator" or something... I was also squeamish about "spearing" them on the hook -- YUK!
