POR first-timer....couple of ????

Hi all. I will be staying at POR for the first time this august with my husband and had a couple of questions for the experts!! 1.) what area/building should i request? we will have a car so the bus transportation is not imperative 2.) tell me about restaurant/food choices....is the food good or should we plan on eating else where 3.) do the rooms have mini-fridges? toaster?? 4.) tell me about the carriage rides....how long do they last? how many people per carriage? 5.) i have booked a standard room, should i try to upgrade? what would an upgrade entail. Thanks for your help

There are 2 parts to POR. The AB side and Mansion side.
I prefer the AB but that's my personal choice. The Lodges have numerous rooms and are 2 story bldgs. with no elevators. The Mansions are 3 stories and have elevators. Both areas are nice but IMO the Lodges are closer to the main area that houses the lobby, registration, food court, lounge, general store and Boatwrights (their sit down restuarant). The landscaping at POR is simply beautiful and much more lush in the AB section.

Your question answers:
1) The closest Lodges are 14, 16, 18 and 27. # 18 is also right next to a quiet pool.
2) The food court is huge with many choices and plenty of seating. The TS restuarant, Boatwrights, is very nice and open for breakfast and dinner.
The food in both is good but not spectacular. The only room service POR has is for pizza delivery.
3) The rooms have a good size refrigerator, 4 cup coffee pot, hair dryers.
There is a microwave and toaster available in the food court for use.
4) The carriage ride is 25 minutes for $35.00. It seats 4 adults or 3 adults and 2 children.

I wouldn't bother with an upgrade all the locations are nice. They have the quiet pools and a main pool with slides and the pool bar is located there.
Don't miss Bob Jackson in the lounge (usually Wed. to Sat. after 8pm) He has a great show. Any more questions ask away or pm me.
August is a very busy time if you want to eat at specific restuarants make your reservations (ADR's) now.

IMO: If its just you and your husband going opt for the mansion style rooms...I think the mansion style rooms are more romantic.

this is building 95- Parterre Place- There are lush gardens everywhere, your right on the water... its just breathtaking...
My DH & I rented a car as well and depending on where your room is located there are parking lots everywhere; we liked parking in the front parking lot off of riverside drive and walking over the bridge to our room, but that was us because we liked to walk around.
Boatrights restaurant & the food court is great... Check out br in the morning and have thier stuffed french toast... OMG, YUMMY! (if you like sweets) Also, they have a piano bar w/ an amazing Piano singer... he is totally entertaining and is worth every second spent at the bar. I am pretty sure his name was bob and he has his own site... dont know it off hand but im sure someone else can help you with that... or i can find it and post again. The rooms do have a mini fridge as far as a toaster, i dont remember having one of them. I would think that would be a fire hazard in a reg. room.
We also did the carriage ride. It was just the two of us, but I did see a family of 5 getting into another, two adults, three children... and they seemed to fit perfectly. We brought a bottle of champagne on the ride w/ us to celebrate my dh birthday. It was great and the driver was sweet as can be.

Again, this was one of our favorite resorts and we would go there over and over again. I think you made a great choice.

Since you have a car, worst-case scenario if your room is in a more remote location, you just drive to the main building.

As for upgrading, the only options at PO-R are Standard, Water-View, or King. you can only upgrade to one or the other; there's an additional $15-$27 per night charge for either upgrade. You can, of course, request the other feature as well. Remember, there are no balconies here - to enjoy a view, you need to either stand out on the walkway outside your room… or keep your drapes open (which allows others walking by to look at you).

Just wanted to add that we have stayed at mods many times and do not quite understand when guests mention that others walking by look in if the curtains are open.

The only people walking by are other guests coming/going to/from their nearby rooms. If they do look it is for spilt second while passing by, so not an issue for us.

I LOVE having the drapes open - and the mods also have blinds - even open (which we always do) someone would have to stop and peer into a room to actually see much! Maybe a peeping tom , but others will not see much in the spilt second it takes to walk past.

View is important to me, so the curtains are open, but truly, we have neve noticed other guests peering into our room. Most do not even turn their heads.

Just wanted to add that although lots of guests do love the Mansions and find the atmosphere "romantic" I was shocked to find I preferred AB! The Mansions outside were in much need of a good paint refurb - the steps and walkways looked worn and dirty.

Over at AB everything looked cleaner and fresher. We did have a near perfect room location, but having stayed there I would be happy with several of the buildings.

it is a very pretty resort, but if you want romantic, stay at French Quarter! Not a bad room location to be had and it is incredibly lovely and quaint (and small enough that no room is a far walk from anything).

Thanks for all the info. We're staying at POR in Aug, and I've left it up to Disney to decide Mansions or AB. Just the two of us, we've asked for quiet, peaceful and that's all. I'm so excited to be going, this will be our first time onsite.
