Popular or Unique for a baby name?

I have a very unique name. It isn't even on the list, and not that many people have it. It's rare for a boy (what it is originally for) and it is even rarer for a girl (what I am). My sister has a name that is up-and-coming for boys, but she's a girl. I've only heard of one other girl that has my name, and I've met two guys that have my name.

My last name is rare too, so when people read my name off of a list, they always pause and usually pronounce my last name wrong.

I like my name, and I can't imagine myself being anything other than my name. I guess it is because I grew up with it. I never got teased for my name. I like it because it works well with my last name too.

Are you willing to tell us what the names are? I'm curious!

I like traditional, classic (but not necessarily currently popular) names. Never was one for trendy, "hot" names (like Tiffany in the 90's, or Madison/Taylor in the 00's) or wacky ones (creative spellings, made up words, totally non-name names like Denim or Apple).

Our DD is Katherine. There are no other Katherines in her school, but lots of variations- Kaylee, Kylee, Kyler, Kahlin, Kaitlyn, Katrine, Katee, Kitson, etc, etc. DD goes by her nickmane, Katie, but when she gets older, she won't be stuck with a "cute" name- she can be Kate, Katherine, or whatever she chooses.

JMO- I like some of the trendy or non-traditional names, just didn't want to go that route for DD...

LOL we have always called our Kaylee, Kate and that is what she chooses to go by now at 11.

I think you shoul dgo with whatever makes you happy. We have a traditional Cameron and then Kate and Karissa (with a K) I couldnt care less if someone else likes the name :) They are all happy with it and thats all that matter to me :)

OP here:
That is funny you asked because one of them is close to your name. I am still trying to become thick skinned to people's negative thoughts. But I will share anyways.

My favorite is -Sabriyah Belle with the nickname of Brea. (pronounced
sah-brea-ah) Not sure on the spelling though
The second is Surina Rose with the nickname Suri (although I am not a fan of people connecting that with Tom Cruise)
We have a common last name that is one syllable.
We are adopting and she is due in a few weeks. Unlike most people we have not had months to think about this. It was the same with our boys but that was easier as I had a boy name picked since I was like 11. For some reason when you adopt you are always afraid the birth family is going to hate it. I know its our choice but still.

As someone who has spent her entire life being asked how to spell and how to pronounce my name, please think long and hard about these choices. Life is short, and I'd rather not spend every introduction spelling my name.

Yes l do like Seraphina although it is connected to hollywood now too. Love Love the scandinavian type names. For a boy I love Soren. How do you pronounce Siri? Like seeree?

Sear ree is how my friend pronounced it.

Amen to that- I wouldn't ridicule anyone else for their name (or choice of a name for their child), nor would I really care what anyone else thought of mine.

DH and I decided to name our DD Katie before she was even conceived- we both really loved the name. Lucky for us she was a girl- we never could agree on a boy name! We toyed with the idea of just going with Katie, but decided to give her the more traditional Katherine, so she could choose to "age" her name as she got older.

One of DD's good friends is Kaylee, and her nickname is Kale. Cute!

When I throw out a unique name I get a frown or an Oh.

Why tell people then? We only told the initials of DD (Avery) until the day she came out. We just didn't want to hear any opinions, good or bad. It was a name we loved and that was that. When we name this next one, we'll do the same. So pick a name you like and go with it. :)

i like unique names. my DH and i have such common names and we both hate that pratically EVERYONE has the same names.

we don't have any children yet, but we've picked out names already that we agreed on.

I named my dd Cassandra Rose. It is not to popular where we live. I wanted to name her Arianna but my husband did not like the name.

yay!! another cassandra! i'm cassandra elise. my dad picked out my name when he was about 9. he always said if he had a girl i'd be cassandra. i go by cassie a lot now.

i don't find too many people with my name. and i was the kid that didn't have their name on keychains. that drove me crazy, but now i find it more often. i just bought a "flashy" keychain at epcot with cassandra on it.

my son has a normal name. thomas andrew (my dad's name reversed). thomas wasn't in the top 25, but i'm sure there will be at least a few when he enters school.

i love unique names though. for a girl i wanted hermione (from harry potter). i just love that name! it sooooo wouldn't go with our last name though!

hoping for a girl next time we have a baby and she'll be fallon elise.

BTW, my name is Robin and I was the only girl Robin I knew until after High School. I was teased like crazy "Rockin Robin" being the least of it. teenage boys are brutal

Its really strange because its spelled normally but lately I have had several people ask if it was with one "b" or 2?? Is there a sudden rush of people named Robbin or Robben?

robin is my mil's name and she legally changed it to robbyn. i will refrain from making a face. LOL she thought it was cooler that way.

I love the traditional but under used names. We choose my son's name 15 years before we FINALLY were blessed with him--Jacob Clayton (great grandfathers' names) Jacob was not THAT popular 28 years ago. We also went with that name as he has the same initals as my husband but not a "junior". He still gets the family watch, ring, etc. My daugther is Charlotte Olivia. Not many other folks under 65 with that one! Looking at the ssa site Charlotte is gaining in popularity.

Mary Lee

I like names that aren't popular, but are recognized as names, and don't need to be pronounced or spelled for everyone.

My oldest is Quentin. So far, he is the only one in the school (6th grade).

My middle is Jolicia (jo-li-c-ia). She is adopted and was 4 when we got her. Since she knew her name, it stuck. I will tell you that I get tons of compliments on it!

Unique.

And by unique, I don't mean Roflamanaqueesha.

Pick something from your heritage! That's a sure fire way to get a unique name that will get complimented. E.g. I'm Polish so if I had a girl I might name her Agnieszka.

I have always loved the names Savannah, Olivia and Charlotte, although I told DH that if we were ever able to have a baby and it was a girl, it would be Caroline Margaret after our 2 mothers. Alas...no babies for us :( so anyone who wants to "steal" that name is welcome to it.

Charlotte! My sister Charlotte Dianne would be so proud! It's a lovely dignified name (unlike my 67-y.o. sister LOL), and also the name of one of my favorite mystery series characters - Charlotte Pitt.

Queen Colleen

I have a Jillian and a Carson

I like names that are not overpopular but at the same time not too different, I didn't want my kids to have multiple other kids in their classes with the same name. Both kids have common middle names.

 or  were those the faces you were refraining from? Thought Id help you out :lmao:

My brother named me Fred the day I was born I have no idea why but almost 40 years later and Im convinced the man doesnt know my real name. I dont think Ive ever heard him call me anything but Fred.

So I answer to Robin, Binny and Fred. meh it could be worse. :confused3
