I bought a bag of Kroger Brand Yellow Popcorn kernels yesterday at Ralph's and noticed they also had a White kernel version as did more name brands. What is the difference?

O/T to above but related, does anyone know if Kettle Corn comes in kernels that are poppable in a hot air popper or do they only come in microwave popcorn form?

Thank you :)

You can make kettle corn at home but not in a hot air popper. To make kettle corn you need to pop it with oil, sugar & salt.

I buy my popcorn at the local food co-op in the bulk section. It puts anything that I can buy in a store in a jar or plastic bag to absolute shame. The hugest, fluffiest popcorn ever and it tastes amazing.

Basically, yellow popcorn pops fluffier but the white seems to be more tender.

I like butter/salt as well as kettle corn. When I pop my own, it has to be Orville Redenbacher, which is what Disneyland uses.

My son-in-law buys popped kettle corn in huge bags -- he's addicted to the stuff. When he was in Afghanistan I sent him a care pkg using kettle corn as packing material. I'm sure he enjoyed that more than anything else in the pkg.

I bought some white popcorn kernels recently. I have to make in on the stovetop in a pan. It tasted wonderful.
Much better than those bagged things I've bought before for the microwave.

Thank you all so much. We need to have a virtual popcorn party! :d Sounds like yellow works best for me because I do have jaw issues and anything too chewy or hard is out. Wonderful idea to look into buying it from a bulk bin smokey blue.

Kettle Corn, my first memory of it was actually on a field trip I took with day camp kids (I was a camp counselor) to a water park. The kettle corn tasted like candy it was warm and fresh and melty, awesome. One other time I had some at a preschool I taught at. The microwave stuff is okay but nothing like my memory of the others.

I will be at DL next week and will try again their popcorn and report back:)

If you can find a bulk food or Amish store, they often carry lots of varieties. (Red, blue, mini, etc)

Even the yellow and white have different types so one brand may vary from another.

I find that the shell part of the white is not as hard, so there's less of those little pieces that get stuck in your gums.

I used to make kettle corn all the time in our stovetop popper. (We had an exchange student from Germany and there they serve popcorn at the movies with sugar instead of our buttery/salty version). I have tried it once or twice in our new house, but I have not figured out when to add the sugar so it doesn't burn since I now have an electric instead of a gas stove.

Yellow brand No Name (Loblaws, Maxi). Make the best popcorn.

Tomatecerise master es popcorn

Disneyland really changed to Pop secret?

I apologize for forgetting about this thread. I try to be good about not leaving a thread I started hanging. I did go to Disneyland this last week and got a popcorn. I'm really sharing this as an FYI, to always be sure to be aware of how much popcorn is in the cart. I made the mistake of getting it when there was only a thin layer left. :/ I will politely say I felt like I had tossed $4.25 literally because I did not eat much of any of it.

That's cool Tzolkin you tried homemade stovetop kettle corn.

Thanks everyone again for all the popcorn ideas, we should have a popcorn party :)

it seems like all my microwave popcorn recently has been so dry, even if i put some butter oil on it, I just cant get my pop corn jones satisfied

Aw, I'm sorry low key. That was part of the DL popcorn issue, it was very dry. I definitely hear you on wanting the popcorn to taste buttery! I remember once at a movie theater having fresh, hot popcorn that did remind me of the kettle corn I mentioned above, it was awesome. When I pop it at home, I maybe need to make much less as it never gets finished so butter would spread butter. What's funny is other than using butter in recipes or for mac and cheese or grilled cheese, I am not a butter person such as on muffins or toast, just popcorn :)
