Can anyone walk me through getting a pop up blocker?? I have AOL but their blocker is awful. I have been getting slammed lately(10-15 at a clip!!!).

thanks

Sounds as if you have one of those viruses that are undetected by antivirus programs or blockers. Do you have any windows that pop up that show (in properties) "illtemperedguppies.com" or "popunder"? There are a few others that you can pretty easily rid yourself of with the correct steps.

I've had a couple of them and you do need to utilize your regedit, but it sounds as if you've got the pop up virus of some sort. Do you get them even when you're offline? Just a thought. . .

Neither Ad-aware nor SpyBot detect the popunder or illtemperedguppies things. Messenger being off isn't the answer either--or wasn't for me. I ended up getting the fix for my pop-up hell of this deceptive virus on Lavasoft (Ad-aware) though. Further, Norton's AV detected nothing either and, to my knowledge, none of them have come up with a detection string for the popup thing.

I did find, in my research, that these advertising viruses/tracking miners, were thought to be implanted when you use "streaming audio" sites. I banned my daughter from Launch and haven't had a problem since. I'm not certain Launch was the culprit, but it is a streaming audio site. She went back on Launch after I got rid of the bug and it came back again! Tells me that's where she picked it up to begin with. So, after many hours tracking the bug--and cleaning it out of the registry--no more pop up hell!

I run Ad-aware everyday, too. Messenger is turned off too!

I downloaded the Google toolbar, and I must admit the pop up blocker is great!! Haven't got any...it's so nice to not have those annoying things pop up!

Thank you all I'll try all of this. Dan I have cable so I'm "always connected" and yes I do find popups on the screen even when I'm not actively online.

Does disabling Windows messenger affect any other function. ie AIM??

Woo Hoo!!!! Downloaded Spybot and was full of them little gremlins!!! Been online for 15 minutes now and NO POPUPS!!!!!

Thank you all for delivering me from pop up hell!!!

Here's another thought: dump AOL. There are a lot other Internet providers with better service for a lot less money available.

"Here's another thought: dump AOL"

I really like the setup for navigating that AOL has and read alot of the aol only message boards!I also have comcast but hate their setup. Getting mail at comcast is a pain!! I'm getting AOL for $4.95/month with BYOA so its not really all that expensive.

No, the Messenger indicated in that link has nothing to do with AIM, just a similar name.

Thanks for posting the links. I finally got rid of my pop-ups. :)

I love my google toolbar popup blocker. It counts how many pages it has blocked. And since I've had it, it has blocked over 4000!
